At Seldons best when he had a bit of balls, he goes 3-4 rounds more then likely. He withered in one of the final rounds against a very good McCall. Shame Seldons judged on absolutely nothing but the Tyson sham... He had one of the best jabs of the 90 HW division, up there with Bruno's.
It could be argued that McCall was hungrier and better-prepared when he faced Seldon. It was Seldon's 19th fight. In Bruno's 19th fight we witnessed him get KO'd on his feet by Jumbo Cummings, but luckily saved by the bell. Two fights later Bruno was KO'd by Bonecrusher Smith, who wasn't much better than McCall - limited in boxing skills and desire. I accept that Bruno was better than Seldon. But I dispute that it's by a fairly large margin. Seldon embarrassed himself against Tyson, whereas Bruno had his pride (and the pride of a whole nation) but he still fared rather poorly, esp. in the second fight. Both fights he spent much of the time hanging on for dear life and hyperventilating. He was competitive against Lewis, for 6 rounds. Then he folded quite suddenly. He was best against Witherspoon, but Tim hadn't even bothered to train. Yes, you can say this all adds up to better than Seldon, but not by much. And their win columns are certainly in about the same order, mostly winning over has-beens and third-raters. Seldon had a weak chin and suffered more flash knockdowns, but he came back from KDs too, something Bruno never did.
I always found it interesting how Bruno froze with the same "oh ****" expression on his face as he got pounded out. Bruno was a bit better and I believe he puched harder too which would have been a factor as rocky moved in.
Yeah. And you just know it would feature in a fight with Rocky Marciano. .... SuzieQ lands. ..... Here comes the big freeze and the "oh ****" expression. .... Rocky's on him like a leopard on a wildebeast .. end of. He'd club Rocky a few times, but Bruno wasn't a sharp puncher when fighters were putting pressure on him. Or against elite fighters who were in shape. He was more a blunt clubber, brusing power but not lights-out sharpness to deliver it.
Well, Bruno was beaten severally by his father as a child, I remember him saying something to the effect that that played a large role in that, with Tyson especially. With Seldon... No idea. Probably just a weak mindset, though that improved as he neared 40 for some reason.
Incidently did anyone see Seldon perform on the undercard of a Ppv fight a year or so back? He looked absolutely horrible. No jab fell in with straight rights. It's like he had a completely different boxing style.
Seldon had a very weak chin which is why this is a easier match up for Rocky as he only has to land one good one ...
Oh, your bronzed idols of yesterday have tarnished and are to be expunged! Glory be unto to he who speaks the Truth! Ahab 3:14
Although I have always had some doubts about Marciano fairing well against a lot of modern day heavys, this is one match that I simply can't favor the other guy to win.. Sure, Seldon had a hulking body, decent power and reasonably good boxing skills, but he simply did not have the toughness on any level that it would take to beat a ring lengend like the rock... He lacked it in every aspect where it really counts.. The McCall fight exposed both his chin and stamina.. The Bowe and Tyson fights exposed his chin and heart.. Even an aging Jose Ribalta and shot David Bey had their moments against him.. A declining Tubbs had him down in the first, enroute to a 10 round decision win...I don't think that Rocky would stop him in one round the way that Tyson and Bowe did, but I can certainly imagine him wearing Bruce down and ending it before the 8th. Seldon had potential, but he just isn't top shelf.... No way is he beating the Rock..
