Ernie seems a nice bloke but he looked staggeringly crude and seemed to always gas horribly when it mattered most. Watching him trying to follow up on his knock down of Larry Holmes one doesn't know if to laugh or cry. On that basis alone I pick the Rock.

I think Marciano would definitely be the safer bet.

Whoever lands big first, most likely. However if Shavers doesn't win fast, his tendency to gas is going to doom him against a machine like Rocky. I vote Marciano while recognising that Shavers is a live dog.

I been in the MSG when Shaver KO'd Jimmy Ellis, after being shook with an Eliis right hand and I see him hit Jerry Quarry with some bombs but Jerry traded and came out on top.

I was also in the Garden when Shavers fought Ali......Ali did the shaking leg but I wasn't sure if it was the act. Nevertheless Ali was hurt but prevailed.

Shavers was about 6" and usually weighed 200-210 lbs

I seen Shavers fight former light heavy Vincent Rondon and go the 10 rds after Rondon was KO;d in 2 by Bob Foster and Ron Lyle in fights right before.

Shavers in an Earlier fight was KO'd by Ron Stander a Chubby 5"10 and beaten and dropped by 5"10 Bob Stalling ( who was previously stopped by Jack Bodel among others)

So while Earnie was an excellent puncher, his stamina was poor and he could be outslugged.

I enjoyed Earnie's stoppage over Ken Norton but Ken who was a monster vs Ali and Holmes could also not fight a banger who could back him up.

Marciano was a different animal and while he could get dropped or hurt, Marciano would put the pressure on with power combo's to the body and head and stop Earnie probably around the 5th round with an exhausted Shavers falling to the Rocky pace and power from rd 2 on

    Marciano KO 5

I'll go ahead and say it since RockyJim will no doubt post it for the 10th time:

"Shavers may have hit hard, but he didn't have the stamina...! No KO's past the 7th round! Can't expect to beat the Rock with poor stamina and not being able to carry your power late!".

Rocky overcomes plenty of adversity and finishes Shavers around round 8

Marciano was of course the better overall fighter, but there are 2 things that put this fight up for grabs. Rocky had a tendency to start slow and get HIT and Earnie is at least a top 3 power puncher in heavyweight history. If he gets dropped by Earnie I don't think he'd survive but I'd make Marciano the favorite here. Best bet is this fight wouldn't get past 5 and a half rounds and if you gave me 4-1 I'd bet on Shavers
