Yeah bro, for me floyd is a excellent boxer, but he isn, t a legend. For fight one legend like maeciano, you should have got a very good chin. Floyd, s chin isn,t good. Yeah, he is a fast boxer and elusive but he has got a great handicap for fight one guy like marciano: HIS CHIN.
I think that Floyd Patterson is the superior boxer, and if it weren't for his size and chin I would give it to him. But if they fight in '56 when Rocky still has some juice, assuming he hadn't retired, I feel like he'd have enough left over to KO Patterson. Rocky would be a cruiserweight in today's game, but Patterson would be a light heavyweight or even a super middleweight. If you check his measurements, Patterson is about the size of Carl Froch. That's where his speed came from, being on the small side for a heavyweight, but it's also why he doesn't take a bigger punch. However, there is an outside chance that if Floyd was smart and fought on the outside he could win a decision as he did against Chuvalo. Also, if they fought let's say in 58 or 59 I could see things going Floyd's way, since Marciano would be older, slower, with more mileage on his body.
At one time I would've said Marciano easily but now I'm not so sure. I've grown to appreciate Patterson over the years and I agree with those who say he was underrated. Stylewise this might be a very tough fight for Marciano. Patterson was fast and could hit. Rocky would have a tough time landing consistently on the bounding, hopping in and out Patterson and when he does close the gap Floyd's faster hands and longer reach should enable him to land first. It isn't as if he was facing Liston who had an 80" plus reach and a powerful punch behind it. Marciano had a 67" reach and was shorter than Floyd. Rocky certainly has the stamina and durability plus the punch to get the job done but it won't be the walk in the park that many think.
"Patterson can't take a punch, china chin, ANY puncher finishes him early" BS! Who did it? The size difference and Sonny's reach and power were too much for Patterson not to mention his stupid fight plan in both fights wanting to fight the "people's fight" as my father, and others, said. I love The Rock but how many of his opponents in his prime stayed around for awhile that didn't have half of Floyd's talent? I'm not saying a 56 Rock couldn't have prevailed, just PO'd at all this brutal KO nonsense! Oh, the Rademacher KD! Give me a break, Floyd was totally embarrassed getting up. Also the game was different in those days. Pete remained an 'amateur' long after he should have went pro. 20+ pounds heavier and 6 years older. By the 4th round, that fight had become an embarrassing mismatch. Floyd was his own worst opponent. 24 rounds to dispose of Harris/London? Is that the real Patterson? If so this thread wouldn't have even been started. Does anyone think Norton, Lyle, Shavers, etc. would have walked right thru him! Not to mention had Patterson been a bit younger and hit prime circa early 70's he would have been 10-15 pounds heavier. A previous poster gave Floyd an ultimate due IMO. Outside of his 'retirement' 69-70 how many other fighters can claim a top 10 ranking for virtually 20 years? Enough of the 'brutal KO' crap. The man is an ATG.
With all due respect Ovid, a 2000+ Rock may have been 200-210 by today's nutritional/training standards. And, how can you say "in today's game" that Floyd would be a light heavy (175) or a supermiddle (168)??? During the 50's he simply couldn't continue fighting at 175 (and your 168 lb. assumption is ludicrous). He was simply caught in the middle at that time (in the 188-190 area). And, like my Rock example, in today's game, Patterson would probably be a chiseled 200 lb. plus combo machine. My $0.02
Floyd didn't move up until Rocky was gone. That's pretty much all you need to know about what D'Amato thought about Patterson's chances against the debilitating one. Pastrano would have made a lot more sense for number 50. Run, jab, and stay the hell away from Rocky as much as possible for as long as possible. Floyd would have been there to be pummeled to the arms and body. Best way to deal with Rocky was to try not getting hit by him at all, and Pastrano was the best candidate to attempt that measure of evasion.
