Mike Fitzgerald spent considerable time with Moore and his family before Archie died (for his research on Archie's biography "The Ageless Warrior - The Life of Boxing Legend Archie Moore"). He came away from his research no closer to the truth than has already been written - 1913 or 1916, take your pick. It seems a lot more plausible that Archie Moore was 36 when he beat Maxim for the title and 38 when he fought Marciano.
Whatever he was he was not in his physical prime when he fought Rocky. To try and build a case that he was is absurd. He had enough left to defeat a lot of guys but was ot a test for all time heavyweight greatness. He simply could not keep up the pace necessary to last with Rocky. The same with Louis, Ez and Walcott ... maybe none beat him at their best (Louis aside) but all could have done better in their primes ...
What years was Archie Moore fighting better than from 1952-1955? I would really like to know. Even if you consider a "younger" moore better, a younger moore weighed 160lb. How is he supposed to compete any better than the 188lb Archie who fought Marciano? Moore was a very good heavyweight contender and proved that throughout his career. He was at his best in 1955 while fighting heavyweights making this a solid win for Marciano.
Dempsey-Moore would be an interesting matchup. Moore could get blitzed, but maybe he gets up and returns counter-fire. If Moore lands right he could hurt Dempsey good. Walcott-Dempsey would be even more interesting. Dempsey could easily get out-boxed.
Moore was on his best win streak ever almost 50 fights with 2 losses one by DQ and the other a disputed decision loss to a man he would beat 3 times the last one a TKO Harold Johnson...Moore beat all of the light Heavyweight and many of the top Heavyweight contenders, #1 ranked 6"21/2 Bob Baker KO 8 and 2 wins over 6"3 Nino Valdes and also Ko'd Burt Whitehurst who went the distance with Sonny Liston 2 times. Archie also beat many top contenders in both divisions. As far as the division he was fighting Archie put it all together at that point in time and he actually beat many good fighters and had a 38-4-2 record after the Marciano fight where he took a brutal beating and that drubbing more than his age made him decide to spend more time at 175lbs.. I would argue that the Moore that fought Marciano would beat any other version of Moore.
No doubt Moore was still a talented, super crafty fighter at that point in his career but how many all time great heavyweight champs do you feel he would have defeated that night ? Would he have beaten Joe Louis, Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Foreman, Tyson, Lewis, Liston, Holyfield, Johnson ? My answer is highly doubtful. He was in fact soon after easily defeated by Floyd Patterson. MY point is not to question if Moore was still a talented fighter. He was . My point is that he was not a fighter to gage all time greatness as a heavyweight against.
And what fighter did dempsey fight and BEAT that was a gage for all time greatness at heavyweight? Gibbons? Firpo? Willard? Brennan?
People get to caught up in marciano undefeated record, jersey joe walcott, ezzard charles were fading when they fought the rock. Cus D'Amato saw Marciano fight the englishman don cockell. Though marciano eventually knocked him out cockell crowded marciano and made him very uncomfertable and he wasn't use to anyone coming to him or being the agressor. Cockell gave him enough trouble to where dempsey who was fast, so explosive and good headmovent would run right at marciano and go to work both murderous punches but Speed kills and I think the roc would kiss the canvas early. brutal hooks to the body and then KO with a wide left dempsey hook to the head
Cockell made Marciano uncomfortable? Marciano won nearly every round and had Cockell spitting blood in his corner after round 3. What about Jack Dempsey getting floored 3 times and knocked out of the ring by the terribly crude Luis Firpo...Marciano was a far better all around puncher, far more skilled, and far more tricky than Firpo. If Dempsey gets wild slugging like he did vs Firpo, Marciano is going to knock his block off.
Well the same question could be ask could Spinks beat Holmes, could Billy Conn give Joe Louis a battle,Could Marty Marshall be competitive against Liston, could Peralta give Foreman a couple of tough battles and remain on his feet,Could Coyonski KO Johnson...what did they have in common they were the smaller men but Moore KO'd Bob Baker and beat Nino Valdes 2 times and beat other top heavyweights so he was a proven heavyweight, Michael Spinks was not, the Holmes fight was his 1st at heavyweight. You can never tell what Moore would do against an inexperienced opponent. Was he better than Ossie Ocasio who took Lewis the full distance, I think so The Marciano beating was a horrible beating for Archie and he fought hard and got up several times but it was really a one-sided fight despite the flash KD....That fight took a lot out of Moore
1. Gibbons was as good as anyone Rocky fought at the time he fought them. 2. Past his prime he proved his stones against prime Sharkey and Tunney.
Bummy, some good points but neither you or SQ's Jab respond to what great heavyweigh tthat Moore beats ... my answer is none of them as Floyd a year later beat him far easier than Rocky did ..
