You have the wrong Tommy Burns. That was Tommy Burns of Australia who fought in the 1940's and died earlier this year.
...Or that a fighter only looks as good or as bad as his opposition. Pretend for a moment that somebody (somehow) knew a lot about boxing technique but had never seen Marciano or Zale before. Tell them Marciano vs. Layne or Zale vs. Graziano were fights between journeymen and they wouldn't notice anything that contradicted you. NOTE: I'm NOT saying that Marciano or Zale had journeyman-level skills. Marciano was actually one of the more educated swarmers of the past 50 years, and certainly in the heavyweight division. My point is only that journeymen sometimes look like champions against other journeymen, and ATG's sometimes look like journeymen against other ATG's. Once you get past a certain threshold of ability, film only tells you so much. Especially because your average "journeyman" is actually quite skilled. They just can't execute against higher-quality fighters.
I remember people were speculating (half-kiddingly) that a film of British journeyman Joe Beckett KO'ing Bombardier Billy Wells could be secret footage of Harry Greb in action, until it was revealed who the fighters really were. A big disappointment to say the least. There's also a film of Beckett stopping an ancient Tommy Burns in the 7th round. This same Beckett, who looked fairly impressive against these two, was also captured on film being mauled and beaten by the crudest of fighters in Frank Moran.
I'd like to see a clean copy on tape of the 1907 draw that Johnson and Hart fought....... I still cringe that J.J. went 20 rds with Marvin Hart.... MR.BILLbbbatsch
