what are your thoughts on this match-up? break it down. once you have given your input, ill give mine.
I would take Marciano here, honestly. He beat better men in the heavyweight division. He broke down Fancy Dans. He knew how to throw a 2nd, 3rd and 4th punch when the first one was parried or avoided. He was strong as a bull and would not be tossed around a la Burns. Helluva fight it would be.
While Marciano's boxing ability was limited he made up for it in staying cool under pressure. Jack relied on psychological warfare before and during the match to throw em off (A lot like Ali) and then he'd destroy them. I don't see Marciano losing his temper. Jack had an amazing defense which could easily throw Rocky off but it only takes one punch. I bet on Rocky landing a big right hand in the later rounds.
Ali/Frazier I saw on another thread, you stated your age I must say it's refreshing to see a level headed and insightful assessment of a matchup between greats of yesterday year by a younger poster. Kudos.
Johnson by decision. Jack beat a McVey facsimile of Marciano convincingly three times out of three.McVey was 20 lbs heavier tham Marciano and strong and durable with a great hook, he was outclassed .Marciano was struggling against a near 40 years old Walcott, who floored him , he was taken the limit by a past prime Charles and dropped by a 42 years od Moore. He has neither the speed ,the size, or the defence to beat Johnson. Short swarmers did not do well against Jack Johnson.
I would concur that short swarmers do not fair well against Johnson. For this reason I could also see Johnson winning a decision but I would not count Marciano out as he possessed uncanny stamina and hit like a mule. He may have been dropped by a 42 year old Moore but Johnson was put away by a 167lb choynski. Both all time great punchers, Moore may have been the best p4p hitter. Johnson toyed with Burns which does not bode well for Rocky as Burns was a capable heavyweight despite his diminutive size and it again plays into Mcvey's point swarmers of small stature struggle with Johnson. All about styles.
Marciano was in his prime when Moore dropped him ,Johnson was a green super-middleweight when Choynski kod him , there is a difference as I'm sure you will agree.
I'd easily go with Johnson but the Marvin Hart always bothers me .. even though I believe Jack was robbed why didn't he dominate a tough , durable but limited Hart in such a big fight in his own near prime ? It will always bother me in a match up with a prime Jeffries or a Dempsey or Marciano ... Jack was some enigma ...
I think he probably beat Hart, but he sure didn't dominate him over the second half of the fight, you are right to have reservations imo. Would you call Hart a small swarmer I give Dempsey more of a chance with Johnson because of his speed of hand and foot, Marciano was slow .
Im guessing Johnson ties him up every time Rocky Tries to press the action up close. It would be a tough win to force for Marciano. Anybody's fight I suppose.
If Johnson starts out strong enough to tie up Marciano, and if Marciano doesn't attrition Jack's strength and stamina, and also if lighting/Suzie-Q doesn't strike, Johnson has a fair chance to win a fight analogous to a 10-6 (American) football game. Which is to say, I wouldn't bet my health, wealth or happiness on either guy. Basically a toss-up, as: 1) 15 rounds isn't a long time for Johnson, and 2) 15 rounds is a long time to spend in a ring with Marciano.
McVey, on the film available, looks absolutely nothing... I mean, NOTHING, like Marciano. That comparison is just off on all counts.
