Jeffries did not lose 100lbs ,he was also down to weight a year before the fight, when he came back from Carlsbad he only scaled 225lbs. Jeffries was 35 not 36. Two years older than the man he had refused to fight when he was champion. Jeffries and Marciano do have one similarity in common though. They both made careers based on beating up old men. NEXT!!!!
I think this would be one of the best contests ever in the heavyweight division. Johnson would take the first 6 rounds easily with his great timing, speed and all round better boxing skills. Marciano however is as hard as they come, and he would eventually enjoy some success against Johnson. I could see Rocky dropping Johnson around round 10, getting up and surviving the round after a Marciano onslaught. Johnson would recover between the rounds and come out to box safely for the 11th. He would turn it on in style in the 12th to take the round big. Round 13 a desperate Rocky eats a couple of Johnson shots to land solid punches of his own where the contest evens up a again. Rocky comes out at full throttle in 14 forcing Johnson to use all his skill to keep the strong and willing Marciano from his occasional success. Round 15 would be a frantic pace to the end of the bell where Rocky would be all busted up and Johnson will know he has been in one of the fights of his life. Johnson wins a unanimous decision with the whole arena applauding both men. Most of them are Marciano fans but they are in admiration after what they have witnessed from both men.
Some things straight off the bat - Johnson was SO fast to attack and so committed when he did open up with both arms going you got the impression he knows he can end things whenever he likes in fights and simply put every time I've seen him go "fcuk this" and decide that's it - he has obliterated the guy! And quick! The problem was, the guys he fought just didn't know any other way at the time other than to 'fall in' every time they threw even one punch so consequently it was a cake walk for him to simply stifle them straight away everytime and he could handle every fighter he ever fought like a baby?? He must've been insanely strong physically? They tended to lunge in suddenly in his day as well but no one ever really showed much commitment to an attack in any of his fights I've ever seen so we don't know if being swarmed consistently is something he would've coped with as easily? All he ever needed to do was wait for the guy to get brave and go for a shot, and then just wrap them up. Johnson himself never seemed unwilling to let his punches go though? He turned over a nice hook, and he threw a very showy (and very vicious) looking uppercut - he made that punch his own I think. He had a stopping jab as well when he used it, and even though they used to throw less punches in those days but without fail , when he did punch he threw with malicious intent to do real damage when he did throw. He invariably had guys tottering and ready to drop before he was really through playin his games? Plus Johnson was in such amazing shape for Burns in Sydney!? We never saw Johnson in that kind of condition again for any of his defences - plus if people think Johnson only threw one punch at a time then they haven't watched the footage of him finishing Burns? He absolutely rained punches on Burns! Even threw a double uppercut with the same hand!?? Some of his flurries in the early going against Willard were wicked shots aswell. Plus Johnson's stamina was incredible!? He wasn't even remotely tired in the 14th against Burns and was fine through 15 against Jeffries, obviously Marciano wouldn't have just gone along with the "come dancing" routine that Jeffries submitted to - Johnson would be forced to raise his game (which is the BAD thing for Marciano here). I have rarely seen Johnson actually give ground from a punch or punches so this could be a much tougher fight for Rock than most of the pro-Rocky people are thinking - even if I do lean towards him? I think this could potentially be one of the hardest fantasy match ups for Rocky personally? I think he have to take some pain in this one - Johnson was really venomous when he wasn't playing games (haha especially with white guys )
Good grief. Jeffries and Marciano have a lot in common. They retired un-defeated and pretty much faced the best challengers out there while champion, unlike Johnson who avoided the best 4 challengers as champion, and was upset by lesser talents through out his ring career. NEXT!!
Whomever things Sam McVey looks like Rocky Marciano on film hasn't seen the films or is just plain ignorant. McVey was essentially a one armed fighter who was cursed with a bow type of arm. Langford siad McVey could not jab because he was bow armed. Sam McVey was a left hooker, and that's pretty much his bread and butter. He did not crouch or attack like Rocky, and when hit retreats on film. In the papers its the same thing, and sometimes McVey complains to the ref.
Question to McVey. Taking in consideration his opponents age, experience and weight, what in your opinion are Jack Johnson's three best wins?
I just watched this bout of battling Jim and McVey beautiful quality. I can't make the comparison of Mcvey to Marciano from this footage however. http://youtu.be/pay6XBYfnRc
Will Alice run into a child bearing hipped 5'7" super middle? Only a few of will get the inside joke, but jokes aside I do want to read McVey's opinion on Jack Johnson's three best wins when considering his opponents age, experience and weight. Who knows, we just might agree again!
Lets not hi- jack this thread which ,as you have obviously forgotten I will remind you is the prospective chances of Jack Johnson against Rocky Marciano, and the reasons for your choice.
