The James Toney that fought Steve Little vs the Rocky Marciano that fought Lee Savold. Both Rocky and James were 189 lbs at this time and both were 28 years old at the times of these match-ups. (1952 and 1997) Toney 1997 28 years old 189 lbs Height 5' 10" reach 72" 54-4-2 35 KO's Marciano 1952 28 years old 189 lbs. Height 5'11" reach 67" 38-0 33 KO's How would this fight play out?
James Toney = had skills in his prime and a great chin. Marciano = overrated bum with no skills at all = Toney beating the **** out of Marciano until the ref stops it.
hard to say. If Jirov was a tough fight for James, how would Marciano be? I think James might edge it just on speed, but it would not be easy. I say a pickem fight.
Does Toney have the skills of the masterful Jersey Joe Walcott? Perhaps, jersey Joe edges him in power big time. Jersey Joe would Marciano fits every time that he decided not to not do a bottle-job.
Toney was at his best when he fought at middle & super-middle, and i think his best years were in the early 90's. To answer your question though, imo all things considered, Marciano wins this match-up.
realistically toney could oputpoint rocky, walcott made rocky look stupid during 13 rounds until that rocky got the lucky shot, in a 12 rounder walcott would have won hands down by decision, toney had by far better chin than walcott and he was as elusive if not more, tuney could take shots from big hws and he proved it, so i think that it is very possible a decision victory in favour of toney in a 12 rounder
Marciano already beat up a more powerful version of Toney in Archie Moore. I like Marciano by decision or late stoppage
Lets face it, Marciano was the all time cutie destroyer. He shared an era with Walcott, Charles, and Moore, and bested all of them. The one thing that should not be in question, is his ability to deal with this type of fighter.
your comments are simply horrible... archie moore was nothing like toney, not stylistically, and moore was around 40 when he faced rocky, toney was faster than moore, he was more elusive, he had by far better chin tha moore and he did carry 180-217 pounds without problems , toney would have been a much harder match
I agree with this as well. I am a huge Toney fan and my respect for his skill and style of fighting is immense, but Marciano would make him work more than he wanted to, when he didn't want to, and he would hurt him when he landed. Toney had a great chin, but he would certainly feel the punches, and marciano would be bigger and stronger- Toney begn at 154. The ignorance of some earlier posters is kind of sad. Marciano certainly was not the most skilled looking fighter, but there is no way to spend that much time around a guy with the vast boxing intellect of Charley Goldman and not develope some ring smarts of your own. Not to mention 40 plus rounds against Charles, Moore and Walcott. Talk about a higher education in pugilism.
True, he shared an era with three guys who had 70, 94 and 175 fights on their ledgers respectively, who were 38, 34 and 39 years old respectively and who weighed 184, 187 and 188 respectively. All time greatest heavyweight.
You're right. Archie was better than Toney. Moore may have been 38, but he had just beaten the # 1 heavyweight contender 6'3 215lb Nino Valdes, and knocked out hall of famer Harold Johnson. Moore was still fighting at a top, world class level at age 38. No No. Can you imagine Moore losing to Drake Thazdi? Or almost losing to a vassily jirov? He had a better chin, but Archie had by far the better offensive arsenal, hit much harder, and was a much better finisher. toney has nothing to keep rocky off of him. Also when Toney was weighing 217lb, I am sure he was on steroids, as he soon tested positive. Archie is one of the 10 greatest fighters of all time. Toney doesn't come close. He was also a far better light-heavyweight and heavyweight than james toney.
