This is almost too stupid to comment on but I will give a go. Firstly, Joe was fast enough on his feet to catch up with Ali more than any other opponent... and Ali had some pretty decent feet. That said, I will admit Joe's feet weren't as fast as the light and welters such as Camacho and Leonard. You really have a point there. You have never seen hand speed make any kind of difference in a fight? You actually watch fights, right? Those are the sporting events with two guys with gloves on in a ring. Does that ring a bell? OK, please tell me my sarcasm meter was on pause and you were just fukking with us.
A lot is said regarding Frazier being a one handed fighter but I don't think it's true. Frazier did rely on his left most of the time but he had a good right hand when he chose to use it. He put it to good use against Chuvalo and also against Quarry in their 2nd fight. Joe also had a serviceable jab when he chose to use it as well so I think we're selling Joe short when say he was a one armed fighter. He could bang with both when he wanted to and against Marciano I think Joe would realize that he'd better utilize all his weapons, not just his left.
Think this matchup was done in the " battle of the legends" section of ring magazine about 25 years ago and George Chuvalo was asked who'd win it.. Can't remember who he picked.
well, he had his chance to use it against Ali in 75, and Foreman in 76. why weren't they brought into play if he needed them? because,,, he's a one handed fighter
no problem my lad considering Ali was mostly a flat footed fighter after his comeback in 1970 and spent much of his time on the ropes, I couldnt say that Joe could match Ali's foot speed whenever he went to his toes but by then, Ali was mostly a grab and hold type as for his Joe's hand speed, is irrelevent as Joe is not an in and out fighter. You have to score and get out quick. Joe is not that type of fighter for it to work to his advantage
I remember watching a a video that cut together footage of the great heavyweight champions, which gave you an interesting frame for comparing them. I remember being struck by Joe Frazier's speed compared to the other great heavyweights, and Rocky Marciano's power. I think that these are the respective areas where they are both better than given credit for.
With all my 'you can't equate fighters from different eras mantra', this is one that IMO is one for the ages. Tho you might want to add a few pounds to the Rock and take away a few from Joe had they, say, fought pvp in, say 1963? Could have went either way IMHO, too close to call. I'd like a beer and a dog ringside for that one for sure!
The fans win, and when the event end's Rocky's hand is raised. Neither guy had much of a jab, or ran much. Frazier was pretty much a left hooker. This fight would be a war. IMO, Rocky hit harder, had power in both hands, and the better chin.
See this bothers me some, Frazier was unquestionably a one handed fighter. I mean, it's like people don't want to say anything bad about him so they'll defend him not being one, but he was plain and simple. Sure, he could throw other punches in the book, he's a professional after all, but that doesn't change that the vast vast majority of his punches were with his left. A very unflattering amount mind you. Why can't people accept that Frazier was very limited in this regard and could be easy to predict. He was. That doesn't mean he's a bad fighter, he's was in fact a great fighter in his prime. That doesn't mean he wasn't limited and got the most one possible could fighting with mostly one arm.. he did.
Ali favored one hand as did Holmes and pretty much every fighter .. his was a hook opposed to a jab .. he was so limited he gave Ali his two worst beatings .. severely limited ..
