Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Louis

Excellent post. Men like Liston, Foreman, and prime Louis would've brutally ko'd him.

 

Rocky was no joke, great great fighter. But against those guys (and I have to mention Holmes and Ali again), I just can't see him making it. In the case of Ali, I can see Rocky making the 15. The other guys, not so much. Now that I think about it, Frazier would certainly be interesting...

 

So I did some numbers analysis on Joes jab vs rocky , I watched the fight at .25 the whole fight and I did not count double jabs as 2 misses or step back jabs as a miss (to deter Rocky from coming in) I also noted every time rocky countered the jab and here are the final numbers


Joe threw 101 jabs he landed 16 for 15.8 percent landing percentage , He was countered 20 times by a variety of punches in fact Rocky countered Joe more than Joe hit rocky with jabs . A majority of Joes punches that landed were in the clinch and on counters to rockys counters (rocky would slip the jabs easy and leap in with a hook or right hand and joe would step back and boom pop him hard with short rights and hooks. I get why Rocky looks crude since he doesnt jab himself but his WHOLE GAMEPLAN IS TO LET YOU JAB AND DO THE WORK .


You are more likely to get countered or give rocky a path to the inside every time you throw jabs than to land your jab, your best bet is to Counter his counter(his short arms would be a factor here) or beat him up on the inside (pllan b on the inside is do what Tunney does and tie up and do not allow any infighting )

also note I am not sure which lazy dummy in this forum said rocky went low after punches due to balance issues but whether he lands or miss rocky went into a crouch as part of his defense after landing or missing shots ,The film proves it !

I don’t like his method of talking down to people but he is right on that point. Marciano was excellent defensively and solid counter puncher. This is something his own camp knew and the people who fought him learned. But because he wasn’t orthodox some mislabeled him as some crude off balance ape. Amazing how stories get spun when you can actually watch the film and see for yourself. There’s a reason the man never got knocked out he wasn’t easy to hit.

 

he was easy to counter not easy to hit if you were leading especially with any straight punches, It is mind boggling these people watched film and still could not see this , either they are lazy and or have an agenda with Rocky. You can look at Rocky in all of his fights and see you are not gonna jab and play on the outside with him. I also see why people thought Joe was controlling the fight post 3rd round , Rocky was not going in either by not going inside or Joe stepping back countering and hopping back again. But all the jabs were getting picked off from the outside ,make no mistake jabbing and staying outside was not effective either.

 

If you told me the sky was blue, I'd have to run outside and check. Yet, you want me to trust your "numbers analysis"?

My reaction is that Louis showed fine boxing skills. He was the best boxer at over 200 lbs. I have seen up to that point in boxing history. The only rival would be Jack Johnson. I think Marciano would have done very well, small or not, against the earlier big guys.

I think a good point has been made that Marciano was much better defensively than some assume. He could make a guy miss.

My impression was that after being hurt by a right at the end of the first round, Louis was reluctant to swap with Marciano. Louis had gone back but was still a tough night for anyone. He is one of the few champions who only lost to the best out there.

Joe Louis spends all but round 5 getting pushed backwards with Marciano's head in his chest, and is ultimately knocked out.

The resident ESB Anti-Marciano crew : Marciano couldn't solve the jab.

Rocky landed more counters to jab than joe louis landed jabs , you are right these folks are clueless about Rockys ability to deal with the jab.

 

I've always seen people overstate the facial damage done to Rock, who always got marked up.

Old Louis messed up a PRIME Ezzard Charles' face way worse with his jab. Charles had great defense. Nobody can tell me Charles can't slip a jab.

 

actually yes Louis shut ezzards eye closed with the jab I am willing to bet if I analyze the first 8 rounds of that fight , Ezzard got hit with more jabs than Rocky did.
