Walcott was 7-5 over his last 12 coming into the Marciano fight. I am not saying he wasn't among the best around, just that what was around wasn't that much. Charles was clearly past it and the Marciano losses started his great slide into oblivion. You can claim Marciano ushered him along this slide, but it began before those fights. Again, he was among the very best in the division at the time, but that fact is a condemnation of the division in that era.
You keep saying he fought wars against Shavers, Berbick, Snipes, and Smith, yet they were all very comfortable, lopsided wins for Holmes. In going 23 rounds with Shavers, Shavers only won 1 round, which was the round he dropped Holmes in. Holmes also was dominant against Snipes, even moments after the knockdown he resumed dominating Snipes. He won a near shut out over Berbick, and he easily outboxed and stopped Smith.
I think Marciano would win a close decision. Holmes would win the early rounds, and would bust Rocky up pretty good with his great speed and hard jab, but eventually he would get rocked and go to war, which would favor Rocky. ROcky would force Holmes to the corners/ropes, where it would be an awesome fight with Rocky hurling his very heavy shots, and where Holmes would be throwing blistering countershots and combinations. No knockdowns, but both fighters would be swollen and bloody after 15 rounds.
maybe you think that he had comfortable fights against spoon, weaver and a past prime norton too. larry holmes was just "dominant" against guys like marvis frazier
Don't think Marciano has the speed of pressure to overhaul Holmes. The lead Larry builds is enough for him to survive the inevitable scarey moments on the cards later in the fight. The work that Marciano does manage to get done whilst losing early rounds will be key though. If he gets enough done or can force/tempt Holmes into a change of strategy early enough, maybe he could take something razor thin over 15. Over 12 I like Holmes big.
No, Weaver, Norton, and Witherspoon all gave Larry tough fights. If you're going to mention Norton being past prime, I guess you will also mention Larry's torn muscle in his left arm that he went into the fight with.
No, he was dominant against most of the people he defended the title against, despite what you repeatedly say even though you've clearly never seen the fights.
larry holmes would take it theres no question i cant even see it being a close fight , larry holmes the most underated heavyweight of all time
1_wrong, i watched every fight of larry holmes and possibly more times than you did. 2_ really prime larry holmes never was dominant like prime ali, foreman, frazier, tyson, joe louis, marciano, lewis, holyfield . and prime holmes just faced tomato cans and average boxers , 137 years old ali, past prime norton, evangelista, the overrated cooney, occasio, berbick, smith ,snipes and to be honest i think that sponn won the fight. 3_ simply you love holmes so much if you think that be dominant is= to win by ud against berbick ,sd against past prime norton and to lose really against spoon. yes then he was dominant.
Holmes Split Decision. Rocky makes it close with his pressure and power and relentless. Eventually, Holmes is going to slug with Rocky or sit on his punches at some point at the fight. It will be all wrong for Holmes. I still see Holmes surviving till the end, and already having a lead on points, takes a very close decision.
i mean rocky was a great im not disputing that but i feel larry holmes would take take the tko around the 10th round , holmes at his best would have been to much for rocky i believe to fast and he would have knocked him back with that jab and that long reach of his all night
so according to you i never watched a fight of larry holmes basing on i said that holmes was not dominant against decent fighters like spoon, weaver and past prime norton.and basing on i said that he was really dominant just against tomato cans and average fighters like marvis, evangelista, leon spinks, lorenzo zanon, leroy jones..... pure truth simple.... kid you are very funny.
No, based on the fact that you say he had wars with Shavers, Berbick, Smith, and Snipes. Those fights were far from "wars." You say he struggled against them, despite him hardly losing a round against any of them.
