If he needed to, than yes, He was known for headbutts, elbows and kidney punchings. Oh yeah and hitting when down. For my money, Marciano fights Tyson chest to chest, not giving Tyson any punching room for the power punchings which Tyson would need mid ring. Tyson may knock Marciano down a few times, but Marciano's never say die will win him the war of WILLS. This is a fight that will go down with Wills imo. And Marciano knocks Tyson out in about the tenth round after a action pack fight. And like Holyfiled, Marciano will use the clichs if need to.
Tyson is not only bigger and stronger but also to fast and to skilled defensively as well, Marciano would eat alot of leather and be stopped IMO.
You act like Tyson wasn't a great fighter either and BTW Marciano beat alot of old 38 yr old LHWs, Tyson, Liston, and foreman would have all retired undefeated against the guys he fought IMO.
You're hatred of Tyson and love for Marciano has helped you produce by far the most ridiculous post Ive seen on the matter. Its one thing to have Rocky winning but an entirely different thing to produce an argument that has no merit. Point is that Rocky Marciano has nothing going into this fight that will give him any type of advantage over Tyson. Tyson is not only the bigger puncher but has the better chin, technique, defense and most importantly hand speed that will guide him to a decisive victory. Rocky is not a clincher, not does he have a jab that can offset Tyson's rhythm. He doesnt bring anything to the table that can offset Tyson's foward momentum.
Either Tyson wins via early KO or Marciano wins via mid/late round stoppage. It could go either way. Take Tyson out of his 1986-1988 window and I'd certainly favor Marciano.
OLD-TIMERS AND NOSTALGIC FANS, PLEASE ANSWER ME THIS. If you take the gloves worn into account, how on earth can you see Marciano hurting Tyson with today's gloves, or Marciano surviving with the gloves of Rocky's days. PLEASE EXPLAIN.
Once warmed up, Marciano was often relentless in his attack and he packed some nice pop in his punches. He might not be able to survive an early onslaught from Tyson, regardless of the gloves, but Rocky was one of the most determined fighters I've ever seen. I'm a strong believer in the importance of the mental aspect of the fight game, and it's here where Marciano held a huge advantage over Tyson. Would it be enough? Tough to say. But if Marciano DID survive Tyson's early onslaught, this wouldn't bode well for Mike.
I agree with your last point, but prime Tyson had Rooney in his corner and he fought hard for 12 rounds. I'm sure that 86-88 Tyson could fight 15 hard rounds. The gloves are such a huge factor here, I can't believe that it is disregarded. If you use the gloves of today, Rocky is NOT going to wear down and stop Tyson, his only hope would be to survive the bout and maybe win a decision. But again, I would like to know how he was going to win a decision versus Mike. How? By standing toe to toe with him? Get the **** outta here. If you use the gloves of Rocky's time, Rocky's only chance is that Tyson breaks his hands, because otherwise there is no way that Rocky is surviving. No way in hell.
Surviving the early onslaught from Tyson is not easy but even if the Rock survived it how does that translate into a win?
It doesn't, necessarily. However, I tend to believe that Rocky's superior mental strength would play more of a factor with each passing round he survived. Tyson has shown a tendancy to collapse mentally when the going gets tough. I think this mental advantage would be key. Whenever Tyson lost, it was usually due to a weak mentality. Of course, this only happened later in his career when he was past his best, but even still, it was a weakness that could be exploited. Rocky was a slow starter who actually got better as a bout progressed; Tyson was, in many ways, the exact opposite. I reckon it would be a much more competitive fight than many anticipate, given that Rocky survives the early rounds.
The mental midget thing is the escape for nostalgic fans who cant base it on skill and technique. When in Mike's prime, with Rooney in the corner did he fold under pressure? He was a semi-retired fighter when he quit, and he took a pummeling from Lewis that I can't see more than three or four people in the history of the division soaking up. Thats such a weak and escapist argument its ridiculous.
Rocky never got better as bouts progressed, its more a case that his opponents get worse - which is to Rocky's credit as a result of wearing fighters down. Also Tyson didnt lose as a result of a weak mentality, you're thinking of Andrew Golota. Tyson lost (when he was still an elite fighter) because he was underprepared and fought with no game plan and was, as a result, outboxed and beaten. The thing about mental advantage just means that he will be in there to fight and will push himself to win. That's all. It means more when fighters are evenly matched. But having the mental advantage isnt going to make you more accurate or take shots better Otherwise Frazier would have beaten Foreman twice. I stick with my original position Tyson KO4
