I'm not so sure about that. We know that both are: -Extremely durable -Very hard hitters -Have excellent stamina -Offensively orientated You do the math. Marciano retired after a relatively short career because he has a young man's style. A fight like this would surely shorten both men's careers, but also enhance it.
It is very hard for me to envision any man shorter, smaller than Marciano being able to outbrawl him. But I guess stranger things have happened. One little chiink in Langford's armor was his defense. While solid, it was not specacular. He often left his head hanging out there, and I think his pro offensivea style will leave sam open to Marciano's titantic bombs in close. Sam would be much better off to fight a defensive game plan vs marciano, rather than trying to beat the rock at his own game.
I know people will write this off as a hoax, but Sam in his heavyweight prime did have quite a bit of trouble brawling with 5'9 160lb brawler Stanley Ketchel. While Sam did have great success vs large heavyweights, this does not translate to him having success vs 5'11 185lb crouching crushing swarmers.
Wow. Langford probably has the edge in terms of speed, and from what I've been able to see is probably defensively sound enough to avoid the majority of the Rocks' rushes at least at the beginning while he tries to set up the big payoff shot. But Marciano isn't completely devoid of defensive abilty, either, and Sam never manages to get him just right. So eventually, Marciano is able to work his way into the trenches, where his size and non-stop attack begins to become more and more of a factor as the rounds progress. Langford hangs in there, fighting hard all the way, but comes up just short on all three scorecards in a grueling, bitterly fought war.
