I agree it would be physical and I would not underestimate Rocks strength..The early rds favor Sonny but in an exchange on the inside Sonny would fell some of Rockys power and both men would be in there with the hardest punching man they faced...dont get me wrong as far as a pinpoint puncher Walcott was one of the best but Sonny was heavy handed but slow...I too see this fight going into the later rds and that is where i see marciano getting stronger, provided he does not get too much damage early but i see him hanging with Sonny and landing a lot of his shots on the inside and landing more...going into the 10th rd...Rocky may be behind but his workrate takes over and he starts to out work Sonny over the last 5 rds. Could Rocky do a 3 punch blast like Leotis Martin yes, I see the fight ending with Liston failing to come out from the 10th rd on but a decision odly enough could happen...I see the dangerous part of this fight for Marciano early but he had a way of avoiding clean shots vs Louis, Walcott,Layne....Rocky was dropped for flash KD's but was never hurt in a fight and liston was solid as well so it could be a war of attrition
I spoke to many trainer and they said Louis was the perfect size heavyweight 6"2 213 but hat was before heavyweights and weight training...what happened if middleweights weight trained and ate and did not watch there weight...they would be heavyweights...look at James Toney
Since when is his autobiography the ultimate authority on his height, though? Most sources say he's 6'2 and he looks the part. For Liston, it varies from 6'0 to 6'1, but i think Ali has more than two inches on him. As for Louis' weight, as SQ said, he was 213lbs against Marciano and that's a fact. And he was ripped, too. Sparred 92 rounds for the fight. This content is protected
According to Louis himself he was 6 1 1/2in tall. What he weighed when he fought Marciano is not what he weighed in his prime as Champion,Louis's average weight as Champ was around 200lbs.
"Martin knocked him cold with a single punch ". Bollocks! Liston had dominated the fight winning ,probably 5 of the 1st 7 rds, flooring Martin in the 4th,,Sonny tired going into the 8th and Martin had his best round ,outjabbing the old warhorse. In the 9th Martin stayed in front of Liston and traded more, Sonny was breathing heavily ,he had a bad nose injury and was very weary ,Marin landed a booming right ,then followed up with a left hook right cross to ko Liston .Liston was anywhere up to his early 40s by then. Bringing this fight into the equation is ridiculous, it is akin to judging a Marciano performance ,if Rocky had continued fighting for another 5 years, and was facing the Patterson who destroyed Ingo the the rubber match, in 1960.
Well one guy I really respect knew Marciano and said his leverage on a punch was incredible...he felt Louis had the best leverage but that Marciano had savage power and leverage combined with the very best condition, heart and the will to win...He said there would be no doubt Marciano would KO Tyson...He loved Liston also...felt something went wrong before Ali (even if it was in Liston's mind) but there was either a deal or a crack or a flaw in Liston that was exposed....a fight between Marciano and Liston would be a rough and rocky fight between the 2 but that Rocky had an inhuman will to win and pain would not stop him...the questions with Liston was what really happened in the 2 Ali fights...If we forget those 2 fights...Liston would be formidable vs any of the ATG's....the bully syndrom stained him a bit....on Marciano he said He should not be underestimated vs anyone...he also felt a lot of the heavys today get so big and fat because they do not have to make weight when fighters of yrs ago had tappered waists and were fit and cut. He said if a middle weight did not train for weight and did weights and eat, he would be a heavy...and I thought of the 5"9 James Toney at 238 ........ he said Liston was a beast with a puzzle but a beast never the less
Liston was an animal. Even at anywhere from 39-42 years of age(depending on the source)....he was still good enough to be extremley dangerous to top contenders. He dominated a powerful hitter # 9 rated Leotis Martin and outslugged him for 8 rounds before the crippling shot. Joe Fraziers management wanted no part of Sonny liston around the late 1960s.
:good the part about frazier being kept away from sonny was exactly what i'd heard/read. as for his age in his final fight, sonny looked every day of 42/43
A mananger that matched Frazier against an old Liston should be banned from the business. This would be the ultimate example of high risk/low reward as far as Frazier is concerned.
