Rocky Marciano vs. Sugar Ray Robinson.

Pick someone that is like Marciano that SRR faced, or could have faced in his division that was a hard hitting swarmer, with endurance and chin.

Kid Gavilan spoke about fighting Rocky Marciano.
He likened himself the the "old timer" fighters like the original Joe Walcott who would give up 30 or 40 pounds routinely.

Probably just something to get some copy in the newspapers though.
His manager Angel Lopez was quoted as saying it's ridiculous, and he'd never let Gavilan near Marciano.

 

Do you even know wtf you are talking about? You list every Middleweight fight Robinson had where he was equal in size and weight to his opponents, and I'll list the ones in which he wasn't. You do realise he gave away weight in almost every 160 fight he had don't you?

 

It don't work like that.

 

Robinson would probably get walked down by Marciano and ko'd but you never know with someone of Robinson's ability.

always obsess over

size matters.

It is hard to see Robinson winning, and his performance against Maxim, and the way he wilted when Joey went to the body, does not speak well in my judgment about how he would do with Marciano.

As for Robinson hurting Marciano, Moore was 30 lbs. heavier than Robinson, and Walcott 40 lbs. heavier.

Both Maxim and LaMottta pointed out how much tougher it was to fight heavyweights or light-heavyweights than Robinson despite Robinson's superior talent.

 

Robinson would have no chance. But he'd fall into the similar category of men who Rocky actually fought.

 

Size matters.


But it matters less in the higher weight classes, any man 190 or better can flatten ANY size man with one punch. Its physics, and science. Something Americans are better at than any one else.

Also, I think OP was just making a stupid post, He probably really thought SRR could beat Marciano, and because he was roundly laughed at, had to change his story because he was embarrassed.

 

Now thats a nice piece of revisionism. It was the heat combined with his 157 to Maxim's 173 in said heat that caused him to wilt, in a fight he was winning. Or are you calling SRR a quitter? Cos that WOULD be a first.

I'd take the word, of one guy that was losing until heat exhaustion intervened, or a guy that won 1 out of 6, about how much easier Robinson was to fight about as seriously as Jack In The Beanstalk.
