Tubbs was an imposingly sized, highly skilled, lightning quick fighter with excellent fundamentals. Don C*ckell wouldn't last 3 rounds, let alone 9, with a prime Tony Tubbs!
Tony Tubbs stank. Sure he had talent but Tony used his talent like a sparring partner. Making rounds close, fighting just hard enough to prevent the tempo lifting into anything serious. He was clever, I give him that. He had quick hands but what did he ever do with it? He was good for making rounds close. That's it. This guy had no signature wins worth anything at all. To pick him over a great fighter, any great fighter, a great middleweight even is just plain silly.
Again Tubbs was a zero. Marciano would beat him into submission. Matching an ATG with ATG attributes vs a fat contender who fought in an era when being a contender was not a very difficult task.
Would you say, it was more difficult to become a contender during Marciano's reign... you know, that time when a hog-fat Brit (who would be ridiculously overmatched if thrown in against Tubbs!) was ranked #2 at heavyweight by The Ring? Come to think of it, how many of the top-10 heavyweights back then would you pick to beat prime Tubbs?: 1. Nino Valdes 2. Don ****ell 3. Ezzard Charles 4. Bob Baker 5. Earl Walls 6. Heinz Neuhaus 7. Rex Layne 8. Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson 9. Charley Norkus 10. Jimmy Slade (The Ring's 1954 Annual Ratings)
Who did Tubbs beat though? Seriously, who! I can't think of one win Tubbs had that could not have been matched by Joe Bugner or Marvis Frazier.
It lasted an entire morning. Unfortunately he spent that time on a couple boxes on donuts. Tubbs KO11 The Irock
How many 6 foot 3 inch guys with 80" reaches and who were fit at 230 pounds, and who were world class, did Marciano face?
None. But you're taking one aspect of the story, and blowing it out of proportion. Rocky had the power and ability to knock out any man of any weight. It's obvious just watching his punches land. Seriously, have you seen him fight? He can rattle you with every punch, and does so at a ridiculous pace.
