So, who of a world class level and anywhere near Tubbs' amazing dimensions did he beat? I have seen him beat down a tired, old man who had schooled over the previous 12 rounds, some light heavies, a guy with oncoming ALS who would go less than .500 over the rest of their career, a doughboy from Utah who couldn't do more than 20 push-ups, a destitute old champ fighting to pay back taxes with only one hand and a hype job from nowheresville Washington. Tubbs was a dynamic, skilled and very fast fighter who could go the distance and enforce a fight plan.
He beat the second best heavyweight of all time, halting his KO streak. He beat Ezzard Charles twice, who is one of the greatest boxers of all time, and who moved up to the heavyweight division to dethrone Joe Louis. He beat Jersey Joe Walcott twice, who knocked down Joe Louis twice, and scored one of the greatest knockouts of all time against Charles. Marciano beat Walcott with the best, or one of the best knockouts in boxing history. He beat Archie Moore, one of the greatest boxers of all time. Rocky didn't just beat all these guys, he did so in spectacular fashion. He also dismantled top 10 contenders, and had an incredible KO percentage. The testimonials of his opponents speak volumes about his power and his style. Including a testimonial from Muhammad Ali, the greatest of all time, who said on multiple occasions that Marciano would be his toughest h2h fight in history. Who the **** is Tony Tubbs?
I think Cesar Brion halted whatever KO streak you are imagining. And against Bivins, he had but one arm. Did he beat him at lightheavy, when he actually was one of the greatest boxers of all time? Charles went on to a sub .500 record following Marciano and was showing the wear and tear of a long career. A guy in his final two fights at the age of 107. A guy who had Marciano down in their first fight and nearly finished him again late but ran out of gas on his 107 year old legs and got finished as he lazily fought off the ropes because his 107 year old legs were shot. [/QUOTE] Sh*t. He should have fought Benny Leonard, too. He was also one of the greatest boxers of all time. Tony Tubbs was an Adonis who bestrode the greatest era the division has ever known. When civilization is but dust blown into the great abyss, the name Tubbs will still echo in mankind's collective ear.
And he never scored a decent signature win worthy of a comparison to any ATG fighter of any size. Tubbs could "go the distance" because he fought like a sparring partner. He had fast hands but who did he beat that Joe Bugner or David Bey didn't? The level of commitment Tubbs had as a fighter was inferior in every way to great fighters in general. He was a one time contender who went through the motions. He hardly looked like he wanted to win most of the time. Beating Greg Page, an accidental winner if ever there was one, after Greg had already lost to Witherspoon, Berbick and David Bey made Tony, like Greg, a brief holder of a belt no more worthy of #4 position in the Ring Magazine ratings in any other era. It does not qualify as championship material in an ATG sense.
He beat a bright shining star, a kid with true greatness in his eyes and a jab that was the fancy of the cognoscenti, in Bruce Seldon. To all viewers, he beat the first wave of Beasts from the East, an undefeated southpaw colossus named Zolkin. Also robbed against better funded fast-tracked favorites in Witherspoon and Bowe, it is only just to give him those decisions by default and turn back the crimes and iniquities of the past.
Who wins a fight isn't determined by who is greater in an all-time sense. Otherwise Sugar Ray Robinson whips Marciano. It's about the styles, attributes and strengths and weaknesses of the fighters. A 6'3 230lb super fast boxer with skills and durability is going to pose some serious problems to a small, slow, hittable brawler who went life and death with the older, smallish heavies who dominated the division in his own time.
Going to have to go with Marciano by KO here. I think he'd be able to get on the inside and wear him down for the KO.
The Tony Tubbs of the first minute of the Tyson fight would have given Marciano fits for the first minute of their fight.
Just incredible their are those that would argue a fat tub of Sh.. Like Tubbs has a chance in a 15 round fight with an ATG animal like Marciano. Rocky would brutalize him.
Fat *ss, 5 foot 11, light heavy, Don C*ckel frustrated IRock to no end, forcing the Blockbuster into every dirty trick in the book. Had that fight been in the UK, Marciano would have been DQ'd. Now put a specimen like Tubbs in there that night... "And the new...!"
As typical SEA you have no clue. Hypothetically matches are of fighters at their best not worst. Rocky kills the fat Tubb. ATG with ATG abilities vs a nothing already forgotten in history. A brutal 10th round ko in a one sided fight.
Do you think Marciano was in the same league as Louis in terms of punching? Do you think Louis had a hard time with bigger fighters? Marciano had top tier punching power. He would demolish Tubbs. Cmon.
