Rocky's left hand is underrated. He could knock you out with either hand, but his right was a little stronger.

  6. i do agree , it was primarly the right ,
tht accounted 4 multiple knockouts ,
    and knockdowns .
the way he loaded up on the left hook ,
was plainly epic , however , on THE BROWN BOMBER .
    still give it 2,
    rocky's right punch , tho.

His left uppercut was great against Louis. I think his left uppercut is probably one of his more underrated punches. He had a good left hand, and a good left hook but he could throw the uppercut with either hand at will. Of course, his best punch was probably his short right hand (AKA Suzie Q).

Hard enough to knock anyone out is hard enough. Two handed power means you get the job done with both hands. Louis and marciano had them asleep with both. mathews was out for as long from a left as walcott was from a right, way over 10 seconds each.

A cattle pistol produces the exact amount of presure to result in a suficient unconsiousnes regardless of the size of the beast and in the right place, with the right timing a human punch conducts a simuar result on humans.

whilst I accept some fighters have more power and more effect with less aparent effort a single Knockout punch still suplies a KO. I have never understood the "who punches harder" argument. A fighter can either get the job done or he cant. A KO is a KO. The only real gift is when a beter fighter can KO fighters with world class anticipation and reactions.

choklab, I agree -- the 'who punches harder' thing is a bit fetishistic.

It's a bit like arguing baseballs greatest batters and getting fixated on who hit the ball the farthest. Maybe Greg Luzinski or Frank Howard or Dave Kingman hit it a bit further than Joe DiMaggio or Stan Musial; they sure as hell weren't as great hitters than those two, though.

There are degrees of actuality in hard hitting -- like a tree falling in the forest, which has a power (an actual potential*) to be heard, but may not actually be heard, so too there is power in the sense of a potential to land hard, and there is the actuality of landing hard.
If I say 'What hits harder, a cadillac going 40 mph, or a cadillac going 40 mph', you'll answer, on an all things being equal basis, that the Cadilalc going 70 mph hits harder. But if we make the determinate basis on which each of the cars are hitting, and find that the car moving 70 mph is rear ending a car going 55 mph, while the car going 40 mph is going head on into another car going 40 mph ..... well, it's the same with punching: it's not just how hard you throw, it's also whether you get the other boxer to cooperate.

    ------

    * 'actual potential' -- i.e. first actuality/second potential. I'm trying to express what Aristotle means by first and second potentials and actualities, eg, a capacity to learn French is the first potential of speaking French; knowing how to speak French is the first actuality of speaking French and, also, the second potential of speaking French; to actually be speaking French is the second actuality of speaking French.

kind of understand where you're coming from - I've always thought that ALL Rocky's punches were great - aside from the left jab of course - alot of people always go on about Rocky's overhand right and right cross which admittedly were probably amongst the very best ever - but I personally think his other punches were just as great - and I personally think Rocky's left hook criminally never mentioned - he had a great left hook - not only the double left hook against Kid Matthews, but the double left hooks he landed against the inhumanly durable Ezzard Charles - and numerous against Archie Moore also - the left hook against LaStaza aswell that one was a crusher!! Marciano had brutal brutal uppercuts too with both hand - great great body shots - I honestly don't see any standout punch from Marciano (save for maybe the Walcott KO right) all his punches were great and brutal - and they never stopped coming.

Other posters have explained for me :good

Marciano had harder punches, but they were all fairly conventional. The left uppercut came up at a strange angle and caught people unawares. It was his classic set-up shot.

His fine left hand arsenal was overshadowed by the Suzie -Q but he had a vast variety of rhythm breaking and odd angled punches with both hands and it was by design...Charlie Goldman took Marciano's strengths and weaknesses and crafted a masterpiece.

Goldman desrves credit for his work with The Rock...he said that Rocky always listened to him....and he only had to tell him once...
