Rodolfo Gómez, Jr. vs. Ricardo Mayorga, 10 rounds @ super middleweight

 

El Matador and his opponent have retreated into their respective corners while a mariachi band (I count four horns and three guitars, plus a vocalist) do the national anthems.

 

Round 1

Gómez is putting out the left stick. Gómez has quite a reach advantage, his arms practically doubling Mayorga's in length (but also girth, they're each like a plastic egg full of putty stretched from one end of a ballroom to another). Cagey opener, lots of Gómez jabbing over Mayorga's head and Mayorga throwing slow telegraphed body shots and either nicking the armpit or missing altogether. Spinning clinches, very frequent. Nothing all that clean for either.

Round 2

Gómez is jabbing Mayorga in the face easily from outside, sniping him flush on the gob and hooter. Mayorga is backed into the ropes and drops his arms, doing his trademark "Come on, hit me" bit. Gómez does. Mayorga then decides his turn has come and the rickety battle-wagon comes lumbering forward, wheels a bit unhinged, balance shot to hell as he loops in wild shots at the body leaning forward with his upper body perpendicular to his lower, and slaps up top with tennis-serve rights. None of this stuff is landing, needless to say.

Round 3

Gómez is starting to get touched, and he's unable to cope with the old man's power. Mayorga is leading with actual left hooks now, as opposed to just looped haymakers. Mayorga is also throwing lead rights that are relatively straighter than his previous no-look high-fives while bent toward his foe. Mayorga picking his spots and even pulling out some front-foot defensive tricks, flipping his elbows up to catch Gómez's fists when the latter throws a counter 1-2. Mayorga bullying Gómez across the ring, hitting the body where he can. Lots of showboating from Mayorga.

Round 4

Gómez is flat-out running now. Mayorga has upended his toolkit and found & dusted off the jab. There's rust on it, but he manages to score with it as Gómez is retreating in unimaginative straight lines and frequently feeling the corner turnbuckle caress his spine. Mayorga jabbing to make Gómez duck and then clobbering him with a downward mace-like right. Nasty clash of heads. The ref has a look; Mayorga got the worst of it. Time in. Sporting glove touch initiated by Mayorga. Jabs by Mayorga, alternating from navel to floating rib and down again - tattooing every inch of Gómez's long skinny torso. Mayorga outboxes him in the final minute, Gómez just a deer in the headlights now, either scared of the power of Mayorga or starstruck/awed by the moment.

It was looking dodgy early on but he's coming on in this.

 

I believe the ring announcer just gave open scoring results over the PA but I couldn't make them out clearly over the Nicaraguan commentators for Canal 6.

 

Round 5

Gómez is jabbing and hanging back, circling wide and using the full ring (which is quite large & spacious). Mayorga is cutting it off as best he can with his creaky and inflexible legs. Mayorga is connecting on some BOMBS when Gómez briefly allows himself to be hung up on the ropes, stupidly leaning into them over and over as his newbie instincts cause him to freeze up rather than kick into high gear and move laterally when Mayorga charges him. Gómez covering up and getting rocked around.

Round 6

Gómez is getting tagged up now, partially blocking at least 90% of Mayorga's shots but getting shaken like a leaf in the wind by 100%. Mayorga is teeing off, having everything his way, finding Gómez rather easy to catch up with by just heading off his circular route by marching in diagonals. Mayorga drops his gloves again, having a bit of fun, daring Gómez to have a go. A few jabs by Gómez but that's all he dares, flurrying and backing up.

Round 7

Mayorga comes out to answer the bell for the seventh galloping at Gómez, full-canter! Shocked the old boy can still run like that. Big home run swings by Mayorga. Gómez is desperately sawing at Mayorga's backside with the left arm, pantomiming a jab but not actually snapping it, nor are his knuckles aiming toward any part of Mayorga's anatomy but above/behind him. Gómez mostly just throwing fake punches to disguise the fact that he's clinging to Mayorga, tying up for dear life. Mayorga wiggles his butt into the corner and drops his arms YET AGAIN. Gómez turns southpaw and throws a cheeky 8-piece of light straights into the face, his body language almost saying "Well, if you insist..."

Round 8

Gómez is circling to his left and flicking a light jab into the face. Mayorga tries jabbing with him and is unsuccessful in reaching the lanky boy's chin, but is able to deflect the jabs and discourage Gómez by popping a stiff heavy jab into his forearm, making it feel leaden and not worth throwing anymore. Gómez switches tacts, and starts looping a long right into the jaw. It bothers Mayorga some. Gómez opens up, feeling bold. Straight combo to Mayorga's face. Mayorga charges, attempting to drive a power shot into the body. Gómez pivots and counters with a combo and Mayorga stumbles. Gómez follows up and sends Mayorga skittering on all fours and face-planting! More a balance issue than anything. Mayorga gets up and THE REFEREE WAVES HIM OFF WHILE STANDING!
