He was a great fighter....just had the extreme misfortune of fighting in the same era as Carlos Monzon. Watch the 2nd Briscoe bout to see a great fighter...a super finisher. I could see him bowling over Pavlik, Martinez, and many other top middles of recent times.
Valdez was smooth, catlike and even Napoles-like in destroying Briscoe....I was very impressed.....what a right hand bomb.
Thanks Bummy:good. Always love to read ur posts. As a fellow New Yorker, delighted to read that. Cheers Man:good
:thumbsupThank you,....nice to know that someone remembers the middleweight scene in the mid 70's, and the greats therein.
Big fan of Valdez and could not see a way he could lose to Monzon. He was quick, powerful and threw Louis like combinations. I then watched Carlos dismantle Valdez twice live on CBS TV. Really very little to cheer about aside from the KD over 30 rounds. Monzon showed why he was an ATG.
Really? He showed by ducking Valdez for nearly 3 years and only agreeing to fight him after Valdez had been injured in a car accident and had his best punching hand mangled?
Untrue. Carlos Monzon had signed a 'contract' in May 1975 - to face Rodrigo Valdes in October 1975. The contract stipulated that both fighters (WBA Champion - Carlos Monzon) and (WBC Champion - Rodrigo Valdes) could each participate in 'one' Title Defense each, before the October 1975 'Unification Bout'. The bout was set to take place in Paris (October 1975). In the meantime, Carlos Monzon fought #1 WBA-arnked - Tony Licata on June 30, 1975. Rodrigo Valdes fought #10 WBC-ranked - Rudy Robles on August 16, 1975. Several days later, Rodrigo Valdes was involved in an automobile accident, and severly injured his right hand, which immediately put the bout with Carlos Monzon on 'delay'. So Monzon signed to fight Valdez prior to the injury. Did you know these details?
Thats bull****. Thats what Tito Lectoure said but it wasnt true. Besides, at that point he had already been Monzon's top contender for at least two years. Nice try. Rodrigo chased his ass for years and it got to the point where Monzon was made fun of in training in New York for Licata by fans who came to watch him and called out that he was scared of Valdez. When Valdez came back from his car accident he struggled more than he should have against Cohen and suddenly Monzon jumped at the chance to fight him.
Valdez and Monzon signed to fight in May of 1975. The accident occurred much later in August of 75. Your initial statement was inaccurate. Monzon did not sign to fight Valdez after the accident that hurt his right hand. Period.
And to imply Monzon was afraid to fight anyone is shameful BTW. Suggest you be more sure of what you post next time. That post was completely off base and written to discredit Monzon with inaccurate information.
