Damn, La bamba looked like a cruiserweight in there. He was quite noticeably the bigger man in there and grachev is a big supermiddle too. Rodriguez came in the night of his last fight at 188 and no doubt came in at 190+ last night being that he could weigh-in 4 lbs more. This kid won't be competing at 168 anymore.
I'm not sure how true it is but a few years back when Dawson was on top they say Rodriguez put it on him every time they sparred as well as Froch
An interesting side plot: If Edwin keeps looking like that and can develop into a money fighter for DiBella, Lou will be more likely to pit Sergio against GGG. A lot of DiBella's hesitation stems from the fact Serg is his only champion and the crown jewel of his stable. If Rodriquez fills that void, which Lou needs even if Sergio doesn't face GGG in 2014 since he has little time left, GGG-Martinez becomes much more likely.
The body-shots from Rodriguez were nice but you really shouldn't be able to hit someone with wild, lunging right-hands repeatedly like that. I'll give Grachev the benefit of the doubt and say he was stunned early and didn't recover, or know how to make some time for himself. Impressive win nonetheless.
I'm not excited about Martinez-GGG, either. Although I'm one of GGG's biggest fans and have been on the bandwagon for years, I'm also a big fan of Martinez and have nothing but respect for him. It's going to be brutal for Sergio - that fight is a classic passing of the torch affair, and everyone sees it but Martinez. But props to the man for being a warrior, because the only reason DiBella makes that fight is if Serg demands it.
Beating Grachev is a solid win for Rodriguez and blowing him out was impressive. Grachev has proven to be a tough guy and has been in with some punchers so Rodriguez running him over was a very good result. Rodriguez called for Bika and I think thats a very nice fight. There's no GBP-Top Rank issues here so its probably a doable fight.
with Bika wouldn't be so easy but now it depends alot if Bika still got something in his tank. I don't think Bika is the same fighter that gave Ward so much troubles when they fought. Bika's a faded fighter at the moment.
Bika v Rodriguez would be almost as ugly as Bika's last fight. The "here it comes" windmill right of Bika up against the "right handed Randy Johnson" delivery of Rodriguez. Can't imagine how many times these guys would tangle up after throwing.
With how Bika looked against Periban, La Bomba has a decent chance against him despite looking very flat himself against Maderna. That one definitely goes the distance. Bika has some heavy hands and can break guys down with his roughhousing and fouling, and of course Rodriguez has serious power although he sometimes elects to shelve it and just box, if sloppily - but they both have iron chins.
