sullivan always referred to ireland as HOME, during his visits to ireland he was welcomed back as an irishman, same as all the other irish that emigrated to the US
Thats just ****ing Yanks for you though, desparate to be Irish, Italian, German or God knows what....
true enough but at the time irish americans were regarded as irish in this country and still are, irish americans nowadays are more yanks and merely called plastic paddys as back then they were raised to be irish not american, that is provided there were 2 irish parents in the family and not a jew and an irish parent or italian or whatever sullivan made frequent visits to home as he called it even in the state the country was in at the time, infact its quite similar economy wise to the present day ireland
I don't think birth place is massively relevant of your nationality... I was born in Holland ffs.... Isn't that veird?
i never actually thought of that until i read your post and remembered i was born in paris :huh:huh:huh, weird how i always forget that
Here ya go guys.... http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7 ....and don't come back...
Mmmmmm.... Born in England. Raised till he was 12 and moved due to his PARENTS. Came back at 23, stayed till he was 39. Boxed in America PURELY because if you want to make a name for yourself you have to coupled with the fact the British fans struggled to get to grips with him for a while. Retired 2003 and moved to America cause lets face it, 90% of us if we had the money would go somewhere else other than the UK. To summerise, born in Britian, of the 38 years on this planet till he retired from boxing 26 of those he was living in the UK. He considers himself British. MMMmmmmm yup, he's a Brit. :hi:
I didn't say he's not a brit there fella :good have a second look. I'm simply stating that if he qualifies as a brit then you can easily qualify sullivan and tunney as Irish. as was pointed out, place of birth has little to do with how someone percieves their own nationality. it's often dictated by socio-economic factors. Like you pointed out, not being in britain didn't stop Lewis being british. thanks for highlighting that and helping me make the point. Not being in Ireland doesn't exclude anyone else from being Irish given qualifying factors. Simple as that. same way I'd consider bob fitzsimmons a brit and thats hardly a clear cut one there!
I was pointing out what's different about Lewis when comparing to Sullivan and Tunney, I just did a **** job. Neither Tunney or Sullivan were born or even lived in Ireland so I can't see how you can draw a comparison.
That was my point, I don't think its right to say Tunney and Sullivans "case" for being Irish is strong as Lewis' for being British, which was BamBams point in his first post (IIRC). If you were in a pub quiz, were asked to list those 3 champions nationality and wanted to be sure of getting the points, you'd have Lewis as British and Tunney/ Sullivan as American IMHO.
