He was very good. A bit of a low-rent Terry Norris type. (power inversely commensurate with his shaky chin, and good enough to beat some world class guys on the right night but also lose to some fringe or worse types on the wrong night)

No idea to be honest as I need to watch some of his fights, I've only seen the Chavez fight.

There's lots of footage available. He was a TV mainstay.

His best performance was in comprehensively schooling and beating the **** outta Pazienza. He put on a clinic against Paz.

Roger had an excellent jab, a potent right hand, and good handspeed. His weakness of course, his ****ty chin. Also he was a bit of a front runner.

Was and still a fan of his. My favorite fight I would have to say was the Whitaker fight. Even though he lost it was a damn good fight and he damn near put Whitaker to sleep. He was mean in thst ring. If he had that Mayweather D he could have made a lot more noise and won more titles.

All true. He had a hell of a right hand.

Uncle Roger was an excellent boxer with a mean right hand. The main issue with Roger was his chin, he really didn't have a stable one and could be put on his rear with a solid shot.

What made Roger exciting was pretty much this: "Somebody is getting knocked out tonight." It's either the opponent, or Roger. That right hand Roger had was like a Hearns right hand except he fought in a lower weight class. I mean Mayweather would literally stare at the guy as he went down after hitting him with it.

My father was a big Black Mamba fan, and I of course ended up watching him as a kid as a result.

I would watch his fight against Vinnie Pazienza (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws3eLhZK2LY), who was an excellent boxer himself during that time. Also had a good go of it against Sweet Pea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sFrv9CHPcU) even though he lost.

Roger is why I knew who Floyd was when he was in the Olympics.

Just saw this post after I made my reply. Certainly one of his better performances, and Pazienza was no joke.

If there's any current fighter that I see shades of Roger Mayweather in, it's Amir Imam.

Whether or not he can ever be as good as Roger remains to be seen. But there's stylistic similarities.

...and I have serious doubts about Imam's chin, so maybe that's a valid, multi-leveled parallel ... :yep

He was the typical black fighter of the 80's . Good jab , good movement and could really fight.

Had a very hard career and no gimmies , people say he didn't have a chin but the fighters back then could all really bang.
