Sure, JCC Sr. could have retired at 50-0. He was 4-0 in WBC world title fights at 130 Lbs. At this point he had KO wins over Ruben Castillo (KO6) and Roger Mayweather (KO2). Not as impressive as Marciano's 7-0 (6) record in HW World title fights and 6-0 (5) record vs Hall of Famers Louis, Walcott x2, Charles x2, and Moore.

Pacquiao could win people, so relax.

Chavez was 89-0-1 when he faced Frankie Randall for the first time. Can't forgot those struggles with Taylor and Whitaker though.

There's more of a sociological aspect that comes into play with the record, guys. Doesn't matter if the record is one that was attained at heavyweight. (In actuality, that helps its cause with the prestige attached to the heavyweight title back then). The significance of it goes further than what you are seeing on the surface. Let me explain. Marciano was a white champion (Italian, but viewed as white by the masses). Many people do not want to see a Black man surpass that fabled record. Floyd is fast approaching that record. The closer Floyd gets to 49-0, the more the record will be discussed. Roger is simply making known what many people who've been in and around boxing for while are aware of, already. He's not saying anything new but he is speaking the truth. When a Black fighter gets close to the record, there's always going to be this kind of talk. (See Larry Holmes). I would even consider this common knowledge in boxing circles but one that many people don't want to bring up because of the sensitivity of race. There was even talk about this same subject when CJ Ross scored the Canelo fight a draw. I mean, don't get me wrong, anyone can choose to be naïve if they want to...that's' their choice. But, sadly, that is how the world is sometimes. Don't shoot the messenger...

that record was set so long ago you'd have to be really racist to care what color the guy who eventually beats it is. people of all colors dislike floyd, and therefore want to see him lose every fight he's in, regardless of marciano's record.

people(mostly white admittedly) didn't want holmes to do it because of that stupid jock strap comment, not because he was black.

That comment was after the fight.

Floyd already lost the first Castillo fight.

CJ Ross is an interesting point but if racially they really wanted to screw Floyd they could have just given Maidana the decision or draw since that fight was close and could conceivably been a draw

Is this record all that discussed outside of forums, I don't see major sports publications focusing on this, maybe they will at the 49th fight but seeing as Floyd doesn't openly brag about the 49-0 and hes not a heavyweight I don't think its that big of an issue

    It's just a numbers thing.

Marciano didn't start fighting historically relevant, ranked, or world class opponents until his final 15 fights or so. Mayweather has been doing it since his 18th or 19th career bout.

Clean records are greatly overrated. I'd rate Sugar Ray Robinson much higher than Marciano career-wise even though he lost 2 dozen fights.

Farewell to a Champion By Deon Potgieter

Arthur was well-bred and never resorted to these kinds of tactics.

“There was one guy,” he recalled. “Everybody feared him. If you wanted to challenge Marciano for his title, you first had to fight him. I’m not just talking about official matches either. If they wanted to keep it quiet you had to fight him in the gym. He was brutal. He’d either beat you so badly that you’d pull out of the fight with Marciano, or just hurt you real bad so that when you climbed into the ring for the fight you were still hurting. He was better than Marciano, but they never let him fight him. He was just the guy you had to go through to get a title shot.”

Among the men Arthur met on his stay in the US were Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo, who were both later imprisoned for manipulating boxing through corruption and strong-arm methods. He was matched with big names of the day - Willie Pastrano, George Chuvalo and James J. Parker - but lost on all three occasions. Arthur claimed he was forced to throw the fight against Chuvalo, who later went on to meet the likes of Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.
