Don't forget,,,,,,,,,,,,Jose Sulaiman was running the WBC offices in Mexico. It was worth 'big dollars' to keep Pipino Cuevas (Mexico) at #1, despite the loss to Roger Stafford. Either in a bout with Ray Leonard, or a bout for the vacant Championship. Milton McCrory was about 6-months away from moving into one of the Top positions, and Bobby Joe Young was right behind.
And it looked at the moment as though Ray had an iron grip on the undisputed WW Championship and wasn't going to relinquish it anytime soon. He'd moved right back to 147 after Kalule, and was having no issues whatsoever with weight (always beginning his training camps already under the weight limit he'd be competing at). Cuevas was the biggest established name remaining, and the one guy seen as having the power to potentially stagger SRL as Duran had done in Montreal. Stafford wasn't regarded as having the potential to hurt Ray, and the reputation of Pipino's chin wouldn't really be compromised until Duran. Stafford was getting the next shot, but Pipino might have been in line immediately after if he could have gotten back on the winning track before SRL walked away. (Instead, he didn't compete for over a year, between Stafford in November 1981 and Duran in January 1983. With Ray continuing to defend after Finch and Stafford, he might have gotten back into the ring more promptly.)
For the love of God, Pepe, can someone tell me who this "David Madrid" guy rated in the Top Ten? And I appreciate you putting the spotlight on a forgotten fighter like Roger Stafford. Great research.
D9,,,,,,,,,,, It is very simple,,,,,,, David Madrid,,,,,,,,was the Mexican Welterweight Champion at that time in 1982. How to get to #3,,,,,,,,,,, WBC (Mexican-based organization + Jose Sulaiman + Mexican Welterweight Champion = #3 WBC Rating) David 'Lenteja' Madrid (Poza Rica, Mexico) * A 5' 10", boxer-puncher. * Started off his career as a 'Lightweight'. * Moved up to 'Welterweight' in 1980. * Scored a 'big upset' in September 1980, when he Knocked-out (KO 3) undefeated Sergio Sanchez 13-0-0 (13 KO's), the brother of Salvador Sanchez. * March 3, 1981 got Knocked-out (L KO 3) by Adolfo Sanjeado. * Record was 41-10-0 (25 KO's) after that bout. * Went on a streak for the rest of 1981, and won his next 8-bouts, all by Knock-out. * Included, was a July 1981 Knock-out (TKO 5) over # 9 WBC Antonio Leyva for the Mexican Welterweight Championship. * Record was 49-10-0 (33 KO's) as of February 1982. * That was good enough for a #3 WBC Welterweight ranking. * Signed to fight #5 WBC Roger Stafford on March 2, 1982, for a WBC Elimination bout. * March 2, 1982,,,,,,was stopped in the 'First Round' (L TKO 1) by Roger Stafford, after getting knocked down 3-times, in a bout at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. * Was he worthy of a #3 WBC Welterweight ranking,,,,,,,,,,atsch
Interesting reading-thanks.I am intrested by the comment that he was shot in the back.Is he paralysed now and did this happen while he was still fighting?
Roger 'The Dodger' Stafford July 7, 1983....... 'Thursday Night Fight on ESPN' Roger takes a tune-up fight in Atlantic City,,,,,,,,,, The #1 WBA Welterweight is 21-3-1 (8 KO's), and has signed to fight WBA Welterweight Champion Donald Curry in September 1983. Roger's opponent, a 20 year-old from Jackson, Tennessee,,,,,,,,Darryl 'Fasts Fists' Fuller. Though Darryl Fuller was a good fighter, 12-1-1 (10 KO's), he was pretty much a Mid-Southern 'club-fighter'. Most thought, that he would give Roger Stafford a good work-out, but had virtually no chance of defeating the 'slick-boxer' from Philadelphia. Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Darryl Fuller stayed on top of Roger the whole fight, and kept him backed up on the ropes the entire 10-Round fight. Most thought that Darryl had done enough to earn an upset Decision,,,,,,,,,,,, The Resorts International crowd in Atlantic City boo'ed the Decision. But the 'blind judges' scored it for Roger 'The Dodger' Scorecards; * 6-3-1 (Roger Stafford) * 5-4-1 (Roger Stafford) * 7-2-1 (Roger Stafford) I had it, 5-4-1 for Darryl Fuller.
