Where are all of my boxing history buffs to take a look at what Roland has to say about Thomas and Hipp?

i enjoyed it. just goes to show all talents need cash and guidence. remarcable that the first guy hes the manager of wins a title. I liked pinklon, very talented considering i dont think he started boxing particularly young. Hip was a good fighter, so tough. I remember his knees straped and it was a pity his face used to swell up like it did. he could fight.

Thank you for getting the ball rolling choklab, I appreciate it. Yeah, it is amazing that Roland's first fighter to manage ended up becoming heavyweight champion of the world, haha. Hipp is a great guy and was tough as nails during his boxing career. A few weeks ago, I saw him go a few rounds on the heavybag, and let me tell you, he can still pack a wallop.

I liked hipp. sometimes you see a fighter who has all the ability but something beyond his control always lets him down agtainst the best guys. an injury or even just plain bad luck. hipp was one of those guys. Had he been born with tougher skin and a more athletic build he would have been a champion. his body let him down but was he tough!hipp carried too much weight but I guese that was because he couldnt run much with bad knees. he was beating up tommy morrison prety good until the duke found something extra to save the day.

Yep. Hipp was tough as nails, but the eye swelling hindered his career a lot.

I met Jankelson....he is as smart and hard of a working guy who has ever managed a boxer.
    However to revise this history....
-Pinklon Thomas left Jankelson long before he won a version of a title and if I remember they were embroiled in a lawsuit.
-Hipp could have beaten Seldon if he had fought his style of fight to win instead of survive.
-Welliver is a quality sparring partner...they never win titles....though he might obtain some title shot eventually.

Its odd that Jankelson has never scouted and sought a high level talent....with his work ethic, money and smarts he should be a hall of fame manager....instead he seems to get his kicks from reclaimation projects....Also he never employs a quality trainer for his boxers.

Interesting article. Managing fighters can be a very satisfying but stressful ordeal. You are almost like their parent as well as their business manager.
I managed an amatuer fighter and paid his way all the way to the Nationals in Colorado which were the fights just before the olympic trials. During my time with him, he was shot waiting for a bus, and constantly having problems getting to the gym and staying focused. He lost in the Nationals in the second round and quit boxing. I wasted a lot of time and money but it was an interesting experience to see this kid move through the amatuer ranks. He won all the Florida state tourneys and we took him to Atlanta to face Evander Holyfields team in the Regionals, and he smoked all his guys to get to the Nationals.

Yes, Roland is a very nice guy indeed. Also, Joe Hipp is a great trainer, he just hasn't been in the spotlight because he doesn't work with that many pro fighters I believe. He is due a lot of credit for helping Welliver in his career. Chauncy is a much better fighter under Joe's guidance.

Welliver will be manuvered into some title shot once one of the Klitchko's is either beaten or retires and Jankelson isn't getting any younger to finally have a champion. It won't be Chauncy.
