Prime Roland Lastarza, how does he do in the current heavyweight scene? N B Please no hypothetical projections about him being 6'6" and 240lbs with todays advanced nutrition.atsch Just an honest appraisal of his chances as he was, [6'0" 185/190lbs , ] against what I consider the very poor crop of heavyweights of the present.
I think Roland would do well against Crusiers, as he would of course be of comparable size, then it becomes more about actual Talent, of which Roland did seem blessed, But against today's super-sized Heavy's, ...Well lets just say even a Moderatly skilled Big Heavy would be very Dangerous if he felt no fear and "Turned Tiger" due to his overwelming Size (Alone) Advantage... The Jury is still out on Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury is always prone to walk onto a Sucker Punch....But he fights back.. New Pro's Like Anthony Joshua are still finding their feet in the Shallow end.. But they are all Comparative Giants... and can Punch..and i wouldnt like to think of an Honourable Pro like Roland finding himself in such a situation... Even hypothetically... Theirs plenty of Good Level Playing Field"Head-Scrathers" to Employ Roland to eleviate the need to Handicap to such a degree... Walcott.. Quarry... Rex Layne (The RL's - Winner Faces Ronnie Lyle ??? ) Hell, Give me Roland Vs Greg Peralta... Roland Vs Today's Heavy's... Even today... Halloween ..It's too Horrific for me...
For as good as he was, Roland would have been to small and didn't have the kind of power he'd need to compensate for it. He was a great defensive fighter, but he'd need more than great defensive skills in this sort of environment.
I don't know a manager who would put a gifted natural 180 pounder in with a 240lb giant. I imagine they would do what every manager does these days when they get a talented natural 180 pounder they will get him a training programme and dietician to develop him into a Joe Mesi sized heavyweight. With simular results as Mesi had.. Fury, Povetkin and Chisora have all been bothered by former cruiserweight stars so who knows?
Top 30, maybe. I think a good coach would dissuade him from having a go at heavyweight. I just don't see anything on film or in his resume that makes me think he would be anything much more than a circuit club fighter at heavyweight. At cruiser he might get top 10.
It all matters how he carries additional weight .. some guys have the body type and style , others don't .. either way no one seems to think Roland would be a title threat at 200 or over at heavyweight ..
The way I look at it is that some contenders are a title threat, and some are only a title threat if the title falls into the hands of a weak champion. Lastarza might just fit the second category.
I don't see him as a title threat, in fact I didn't see him as one in the 1950's, but Janitor has a point.
Adamek started as a LHVY but he was an inch and a half taller than Lastarza, maybe his frame assimilated the extra poundage better?
Id pick him to beat Chris Byrd and Wlad became champion by beating Bryd. Not even prime Byrd , but shot beyond all belief Byrd at the end of his career. The WBC belt traded hands with a lot of waste men while Vitali was out, so he could of had a chance there. James Toney was in the mix with 40 pounds of blubber on him ffs
people that qualify as heavyweights these days are bigger even if they are not necessarily taller they are bulky. Roland was a pretty solid guy and had some good ability. He was 53-3 and had beat everyone that beat him other than Marciano when he was granted a rematch and beaten up pretty badly-punished and was never the same. The weight of heavyweights was a lot lighter back in his day but if Roland was born today he would be bigger and the larger guys like Vlad,Vitali and Detontay would not be as big if they fought back then....where were the big guys back then? Roland would be competitive
Who was the best man LaStaza ever beat ? I don't see Bowe, Lewis,,Wlad, Vitali being less than 230 at any time in history.
