Lyle would be outboxed early but would catch up to Lastarza for an 8th round stoppage.

    Lyle KO 8

You think Lyle would catch up to Lastarza before Marciano did? He didn't exactly catch up to Jimmy Young. He also struggled badly with Gregorio Peralta. Lyle was the better fighter than Lastarza, but I don't think he matches up well at all with an A class counterpuncher like Roland.

I think Lyle catches him far easier than Marciano. Ron was 6'3" with a 76"-77" reach, Rocky was 5'10" with 68" reach. Lyle can fight La Starza from outside, Rocky couldnt.

    So bigger = better puncher?

Lyle had nowhere near the all around punching capabilities Marciano had, other than Power..Don't expect Lyle to land anything big on a defensive counterpuncher like Lastarza for quite some time. Lyle had big issues with counterpunches throughout his career. I still think Lyle can win this fight. lastarza himself is unproven against a big calibre fighter like Lyle.

Bigger not nessecarily better, but those attributes certainly make it easier for Lyle to land.
Ali didnt have Fraziers punching capabilities either but he landed on Foreman a lot quicker than Joe did. Styles and physical attributes dictate that Lyle finds it easier to land on La Starza than Rocky did.
Kirk Johnson and Lance Whittaker both got to Maskaev quicker than Tua did

Like you said. Styles make fights. Look what happened to Lyle twice against Jimmy Young, who is the closest thing to Lastarza that Lyle fought. Lyle was not a boxer, he was a slugger. very physically strong. I think Roland matches up well. I think Lyle would have trouble with bigger boxer types, but lyle was more of a slugger than a boxer.

Had Lastarza fought Valdes or Baker, it would give us a much better inclination of how this fight would go.

I think Young was bigger and better in all honesty though. Im not particularly impressed with La Starza. As you yourself stated he is unproven. Young had good performances against far better oposition.

Lyle was a very competent boxer and more than sufficient power.

Yes, LaStarza was a fine fighter - very underrated. He barely lost to Marciano the first time they fought. LaStarza was also similar in size to Jerry Quarry - who defeated Lyle rather handily although Lyle was kind of green at the time. Lyle improved after the Quarry fight. His best years were probably 1974-77.' That said though, I tend to believe Quarry was a little stronger and more rugged than LaStarza. Both were good but not great punchers. LaStarza has the edge in elusiveness and boxing ability.

Lyle KILLS that sum ***** (LaStarza)..... Rolando LaStarza was a capable but normal sized heavyweight........ Ronnie Lyle at 219 to 223 pounds dwarfs Rolando in the process of mowing him down........... Lyle was a flawed boxer, but strong as an Ox with wicked right hand power.... Oh, his hook was hard too.........

    Lyle KO's LaStarza........:bbb

"Quarry-LaStarza" is a better and more reasonable match---based on size........ Styles make fights........ AGAIN! Lyle was flawed and suffered a few losses early on, but stylewise, he kills LaStarza....... As does Quarry, too..........

Lyle was ponderous, unimaginative and possessed with power that is extremely overrated by people in these parts. He never KO'd a good heavyweight who didn't have chin issues and that is a fact.

LaStarza is just the cause celebre of Marciano turd burglars. We have no idea how much above decent he really was. He beat the bum's run of Northeast tiny 1950's heavyweights who all worked the docks and the bars next to the docks on their off-hours.

    My bet: Lyle KO7 LaStarza.

Agreed. I have countless articles of Lastarza accused of ducking Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Bob Baker, Clarence Henry, Nino Valdes, joe louis. Lastarza was spood fed by Jimmy fats Deangelo(a very shitty manager)

But you know what? Watch the guy on film. He had Class A counterpunching skills. He did have some serious skills and nice movement. He wasn't spectacular or flashy(actually a bit boring), but he was an expert on the basics. I can see why he gave rocky quite a bit of trouble both times. Had Fats actually decided to instill confidence into his man, he would have done quite well against the men above.

Actually style wise, Lyle struggles with Lastarza. Didn't lyle fight to a draw with lightheavyweight Gregorio Peralta? and didn't he twice lose to counterpuncher Jimmy Young?

As for Jerry Quarry, He is an even better matchup for Roland Lastarza. Quarry was outboxed by an Ancient 195lb counterpuncher Eddie Machen, and outboxed by 195lb former middleweight Jimmy Ellis. Lastarza's style is all wrong for Quarry.

See I can play this game too Billzers

You guys want a contender Lastarza matches up horrible with? Ken Norton. Horrible fight for Roland. He also doesn't match up well with Jimmy Young either.

But any fighter who struggles with counterpunchers(case in point Lyle and Quarry) they are going to have more than they can handle with Lastarza(A highly productive counterpuncher, who does nothing but counterpunch)
