This was on the under card of Duran vs Hagler from 83". Funny seeing a fighter who's supposedly so crude and wild in Roldan knocking the lunging Fletcher down with a perfectly timed right hand counter in round one. We also get to see one of the fighters knocked through the ropes, prompting the rare and elusive 20 count!!! The fight ending KO, two hard and just about as good as you can get right hands from Roldan that detonate on poor Frank Fletcher's chin, sending him crashing face first to the canvas. As clean a knockout as you'll ever see. Brutal stuff. I know some have said Fletcher was past his best at this point because of ring wars and lifestyle issues (He was only 29, but plenty of fighters have been on the downside of their careers that close to 30. The hard battling and smaller fighters for example) and I don't doubt it. But Roldan came out at Fletcher like a bat out of hell in this one... Set a frantic pace from the opening bell, threw a great deal of hard and effective shots to the body, really bulled Fletcher around and imposed his own will. And that knockout... Roldan seemed to be a very dangerous middleweight all things considered. So, anyone remember this one? If not, thoughts? This content is protected
I'm surprised that Roldan doesn't get more love in this forum. Relentless, offensively-minded fighter who mixed up his punches well and showed a ton of heart and very good power. Almost knocked out Hearns and probably would've given Hagler one of his toughest fights if he hadn't been accidentally thumbed. Think he might have ruined Fletcher in this one.
Worth noting that much beloved knockout artist John Mugabi couldn't even remotely put Fletcher down and out like Roldan did, and that's to a obviously far more "worn" version of said fighter.
During the commentary I believe you they say that Roldan's trainer is the same that trained Monzon to his title championship? Damn fine corner Roldan had if that is the case.
I remember this one...and I remember being very impressed with Roldan's power....flat out serious power he had.
Just who is the middleweight champion today? Ohhhh GGG, that's who...and Canelo is in the mix too. I think Canelo would be in some trouble with Roldan...not so much GGG.
I have pictures somewhere of an utterly horrified Bo Derek at ringside as Frank was being smashed. From memory they may have even been showered with blood.
