Roldan vs Kinchen or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Juan Domingo Roldan

Roldan was a very hard puncher. Michael Nunn said the hardest puncher he ever faced, which surprised me.

 

I think the hype was actually bigger back then. Floyd might have broken all the PPV records but the truth is that boxing is a niche sport these days, whereas it was still mainstream back in the 1980s. In the UK, you'd get heavyweight title fights broadcast on terrestrial TV (I think Holmes-Spinks was shown on ITV). It was just much, much bigger than it is now and I actually think Leonard was a bigger star than Mayweather is. He was a legitinate global sporting superstar because of the exposure he got from network TV so people off the street would know who he was and would actually have seen him fight. I was only about 10 when Hagler-Leonard happened but I still remember that everyone was talking about it the next day at school. It was a big deal.

Roldan must have punched hard to get Kinchen to break down like that. I do get the feeling Roldan in another era is champ and does well. He fought Hagler and Hearns and then Nunn after the Hearns beating. Sometimes I think Roldan took something out of Hearns. It was a tough fight for Hearns.
