Today in Nicaragua. He announced his new head coach (Gustavo Herrera), the return of his father Luis to his camp, a new fitness team and his next potential opponent: thunder-fisted countryman Luis "El Nica" Concepción.

New fitness team, new coach, wonder if his big drop off was due to his old coach dying and him not being on the right "supplements" anymore, kind of like when Roy Jones fell off his cliff.

I guess we'll see if he still has it when he comes back. The old Gonzalez wouldn't have a problem with Luis Conception. Hernan Marquez sparked him out twice and Cuadras UD'd him. By the way, if anyone hasn't seen Conception vs Marquez 1 go do yourself a favor and watch it. It's fire.

Choco vs. Nica is a wet dream, even if both are on the slide.

It'll be just as depressing as Concepcion-Marquez 3.

So he’s determined to conquer superfly. Probably not wise, but I like his spirit.

No, not necessarily, but the overall experience of watching Concepcion-Marquez depressed me, and I think this will too. Roman should win with relative ease, similar to how Concepcion beat Marquez with relative ease. But it was sad nonetheless. Remember, everyone said Roman vs. Segura was a **** fight when it was being rumored after the Cuadras match, well, 2 fights later, and now a Gonzalez-Concepcion match which is on the same level as Gonzalez-Segura, is seen as a must win bounce back fight, for some reason I just find that kind of depressing.:ohno For both guys involved. Also this means Roman will continue, and I don't think his heart is in it, and Yafai, Inoue, Cuadras and Estrada are a bridge too far, he's going to wreck his legacy if he hangs around much longer.

The new S&C guy is Alfredo Corrales, who comes in with 17 years of experience in boxing, plus a degree in Sports Medicine from the Nicaraguan Sport Institute.

Herrera was actual Chocolatito's original head trainer, with him for his pro career through his fight with Katsunari Takayama. Following that match some members of the González camp started whispering in his ear that Herrera was asking for too big a cut of the purse, leading to acrimony that ultimately caused the split. Now more than eight years later (during which Herrera did alright for himself, training some world title challengers like Jose Alfaro, but obviously without a big meal ticket like his erstwhile pupil) they appear to have reconciled.

    Best of luck to Roman.

All things considered, a fight with Concepcion is actually a good logical one to happen next up for him. After that, I want him back in the fire. He was the P4P King as recent as 8-ish months ago. People a little too quick to toss away their respects to the first ballot Hall of Famer.

Does anybody remember what his style was like up to and including his fight w/ Takayama?

Herrera in the fold and Chocolatito rededicating himself to fitness (and eyeing opponents like El Nica) means we could be in for an explosive ride..

I don't expect anything dramatic. His three worst forms were his three last fights and the first three at 115. That's not a good sign. Though one was against Cuadras the numero uno with a tough style for him and Srisaket was a known titlist, with Roman winning both fights in most eyes. Still, not a good sign for the former king.

Just watched his fight with Niida again. Same excellent patience, accuracy, distance, leading, body work, etc in that one. Funny to think that was almost ten years ago... I think the death of his trainer before the Srisaket match affected him and is a note not spoken much of in regards to his suddenly downward trending career. I hope he brings it back and I like hearing of the pairing, huge unapologetic Roman fan here.

Eh, not sure that is the immediate plan. He said he is entrenching himself at 115 and planning to rebuild, yet he openly admitted to ducking Khalid Yafai (saying time wasn't yet right for him, too soon after those losses)

No flyweight is a big meal ticket really. Gonzalez has made more money than all but two or three fighters at the weight ever and his career earnings are barely over 2 million dollars after 48 fights. And that's almost all from his last four fights. If Nicaragua weren't the poorest country in the western hemisphere where the per capita income is $430, I'd say it's not even worth it.

Gonzalez is done, he has taken too much punishment in his last two fights, he is drained at a weight he shouldn’t be at for his natural size and his style is not one that significantly diminishes. with age:
