Believe me, I'm a fan of his - I think he should be making at least $2m a fight at this point. The problem is, most fans aren't as deep into the sport as the people in this forum, so the smaller guys still get a lot less recognition.

I don't really understand it and, from where I'm sitting, these guys should be making 5x what they are but, unfortunately, their value doesn't come close to their talent.

One of the problems that HBO have is when Gonzalez is fighting these tough fights, the general audience knows nothing about the opponent. Gonzalez isn't being paid for the risks he's taking. If he loses, he probably knows it's the end of the road for even the money he's getting now.

The solution would be to start showcasing some prospective opponents on his cards to create the demand. If they go with Gonzalez v Cudras II next, they need to showcase Estrada or Inoue on the undercard (preferably in fights they will look spectacular in)

At the moment to casual boxing fans are concerned, everytime Gonzalez is on, it's just him vs some other guy. And being that he's fighting much tougher fights on a regular basis than basically everyone HBO or Showtime showcase, he's going to look less dominant than the GGG, Kovalev's, Ward's etc

Yes, excellent idea. The biggest/ most familiar name to American television audiences was probably Viloria - and even he is barely known outside diehard fans of the sport.

...and what's really messed up is that his opposition is mostly (with a few exceptions here and there) leagues beyond Golovkin's, Kovalev's or Ward's p4p.

It's pretty obscene how little they are paid. I don't think Ricardo Lopez or Too Sharp Johnson ever made more than 400k. I remember seeing that like Eder Jofre's purse against Harada was like $5,000 plus traveling expenses, or something equally ridiculous. Ah, there I found it on boxrec: Purses: Jofre - $30,000.00 plus expenses, Harada - $2,500.00

He would get destroyed by Kov, GGG and Bellew if he moves up, if that's what you're asking.

Oh, and by the way - the kid on the far left in that pic is sixteen year old Rommel Caballero. Remember the name. Kid brother of Randy "El Matador" Caballero, and currently regarded as up there with the best amateur prospects in the world, with the potential to become the next great Nicaragüense boxer after González winds down his career (or rather Nicaraguan-American...though I'm not exactly sure. The family is spread out; Randy was born here but I know that Rommel is going to be representing the homeland in an upcoming tourney...)

Finito Lopez is one of my all-time favourites and I don't think he ever cracked $350k. He was technically perfect but he always fought on Don King undercards where JCC or Tito were making all the money. He built up a cult following but he never approached the level of popularity that Chiquita Gonzalez or Michael Carbajal did. Those guys were a sensation for the time because they managed to make $1m. In a fair world, they'd have made 5x as much.

They were DKP cards, man - not even the headliners were making any money, in truth. Not what they should've been.

I mean, putting the horse before the cart for sure - let's slow down and let him first of all finish up his amateur business and turn pro - but fascinating to speculate...

A decade on we could be talking about whether a retired González (not Argüello) might be in danger of getting displaced as the country's all-time pound for pound #1.

He looks raw here, eschewing defense almost entirely, but he also managed to keep a tall southpaw who appeared to be fairly skillful on the backfoot & hurt pretty consistently with pressure and body work.

Rommel was racking up kayos before he even hit puberty, too, in the junior AM's - not super common.
