This is currently the best fight that can be made in boxing between the two 112lbs standouts. Gonzalez v Estrada I: The two fought in November 2012, on the undercard of Brian Viloria v Hernan Marquez card, and was televised on Wealth in the US. You probably missed it because popular club fighters Adrien Broner and Antonio DeMarco was fighting on HBO at the same time. Fortunatly it is available on Youtube.: [yt]sCyhK5jopJQ[/yt] It was as excellent and highly competitive. Gonzalez- already well known to hardcore fans pulled of a close UD, Estrada, not particularly well known at the time, earned the respect of many hardcore fans by pushing Gonzalez close (some even thought he won). Roman Gonzalez: Roman Gonzalez has one of the best resumes amongst active fighters. The Ring have him at #9 pound for pound http://ringtv.craveonline.com/ratings, TBR have him at number 4 http://www.tbrb.org/p4p/. And it could be argued both are too low. He holds the lineal Flyweight title having beaten the extremely tough Akiria Yaegashi last week. He was also a title holder at 108 and 105. He is 40-0 with 33 knockouts. On top of wins over Yaegashi and Estrada his most notable wins are his first title win at 105 over the excellent Yukata Niida, and wins over future title holders Katsunari Takayama and Francisco Rodriguez Jr. Juan Francisco Estrada: Estrada himself has recently TBR P4P top 10. After his excellent performance in his loss to Gonzalez at 108, he moved up to 112 and soundly outboxed highly rated titlist Brian Vilioria. He defended successfully against unbeaten Milan Melindo, followed by a straight forward win over Richie Mapranum, and last week he beat down and dominated the dangerous Giovanni Segura. Battle for Flyweight Supremacy: Between the two of them they have now brushed aside Yaegashi, Vilioria and Segura. Despite how deep Flyweight is, the would be no question a winner of a rematch would be the dominate name and Flyweight and a top 3 minimum pound for pound. Will it happen?: Almost certainly. Rumors are that Gonzalez will fight Luis Concepcion later this year. However these two both want the fight to happen and will look for reasons to make the fight happen, unlike other mometous fights where name fighters look for reasons not to make the fight happen. Hopefully a big US Network pick this up and give it the attention it deserves- and lets be honest, if Mayweather and Pacquiao want to put on **** PPV's, they could at least lure in some hardcore fans who scoff at it by putting this on the undercard.
Roman Gonzalez would win again, Estrada has gotten better but still not good enough. It could be a draw.
Its a very worthwhile fight especially economically, HBO had Vilora-Estrada on as the undercard of one of their Shiming-Macau cards. From what I've read they're high on him right now, so it could very well happen. If HBO thinks he's a potential money maker, they'll put him on.
I hope so. Gonzalez would have the reputation GGG is getting if he would be introduced to Western Audiences. :good
Money talks, and he's a potential cash cow, even though he's from Nicaragua he's definitely going to appeal to Mexicans. Although its hard to market small guys in America, but he has what it takes to be a crossover star, and maybe convert us.
My scorecard from the 1st fight: Rd 1- Estrada Rd 2- Gonzalez Rd 3- Gonzalez Rd 4- Estrada Rd 5- Gonzalez Rd 6- Gonzalez Rd 7- Gonzalez Rd 8- Estrada Rd 9- Gonzalez Rd 10- Gonzalez Rd 11- Estrada Rd 12- Estrada Gonzalez 115-113
:happy Two guys in the p4p top 10 (at least they currently ought to be) going at it, with high stakes, in a rematch that we already know is going to be a competitive FOTY candidate based on last time! (and the fact that both have improved upon their form since)
:deal I feel Estrada is the best Mexican fighter today, better than Marquez at this stage. I still think that Roman is going to win this in a competitive but clear 7-5 or 8-4. Estrada has the tools but he is going to require a COMPLETELY flawless execution of those tools. Because of the level of execution required, this can be a little unrealistic in the real world. If Estrada beats Gonzalez, it's an absolutely COLOSSAL win as Gonzalez is the goods through and through.
High stakes at Flyweight for sure, and I don't think all is lost for the loser because I still think the pair of them could move up a division and beat any and all of the major belt holders.
