http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UYW1bSNtQs The interview was taken about a week before the Jones-Ruiz fight
He does make some very good points Roy Jones defining fight is against an over rated (in my opinion) fighter in James Toney who himself never took the best challenges available to him Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Bernard Hopkins 2, Dairusz Michaelzweski, Gerald McClellan to name a few are fighters who never got that chance but still went onto make great names for themselves by fighting each other or the dominant figures in the division Eubank and Benn against each other and Steve Collins Bernard Hopkins against pretty much everyone : Antonio Tarver, Joe Calzaghe, Chad Dawson, Jean Pascal, Tavoris Cloud and hopefully soon Adonis Stevenson Bernard Hopkins to me has surpassed Roy Jones as a fighter, what Borges said was completely right Roy Jones has great skills but he never was a great fighter
We've heard all of this a thousand times. James Toney never took the best challengers available to him? Like Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, Micheal Nunn, and Roy etc, all in his early to mid 20's? Nobody on here ever allows for circumstances. Everybody jumps on Roy. My god, every week on here someone mentions that Roy ducked Eubank. Eubank DIDN'T want the fight and he's admitted it on numerous occasions. The Gerald McCllellan fight was never really viable at 160, and he only had the one fight at 168 against Benn. The Benn fight was hard to make because according to Roy and Greg Fitz, King wanted future options on him. Also, Roy's handlers a the time, The Levin's, were also very reluctant to deal with Don. Dariusz never wanted to fight Roy. His promoter was never available to negotiate with Kerry Davis of HBO, who at the time was under a lot of pressure to deliver the network a huge fight for Roy. He was never available in person, or even via the phone, and Davis's offer of a double header was also turned down. According to Murad Muhammad, DM was making between $1-1.5M for each WBO title defence in Germany, and he wanted $6M for himself to fight Roy. According to Roy, HBO offered him $5M and he said no. He turned down $5M to fight the likes of Joey De Grandis for $1.5M. DM's resume shows what his intentions were. Go and have a look. Hopkins priced himself out of the rematch. He was never going to get 50/50 when Roy had a win over him, and Roy would had to have moved down in weight. Roy wasn't going to lose muscle to fight a guy who he hated, and who he'd already beaten for 50/50. Also, there's no way that Hopkins would have offered Roy 50/50, if he'd have beaten Roy in 93. If you can't see that Roy Jones wasn't a great fighter, then you know less than nothing about boxing.
If Roy jones is not a great fighter , then everyone from his generation can't be great either . That mans accomplished so much . He's done things other fighters can only dream of doing
Putting it in perspective, Borges's slant on Jones, might have something to do with his flying from Boston to Fla. to get a pre-arranged exclusive interview with Roy, 'n Roy stood-him-up
Some of Ron Borges comments were ridiculous. Did James REALLY want a rematch? He never said anything in 1994 in the post fight interview. I've seen lots interviews with Toney over the years, and sometimes he's praised Roy for a great performance, and other times he'd bad mouthed him and said the ran away etc. The only time I've heard him say he wanted a rematch, was when he was put on the spot and asked directly if he wanted one, or if he'd take one. Well what was he going to say? He was hardly going to say "No, I don't think I'd beat him." But apart from being put on the spot, I've only heard him say that he wanted a rematch, after Roy was shot in 2008/2009. So if anyone's got a link of Toney genuinely wanting a rematch, then I'd love to see it. Hopkins wanted 50/50 and he was never getting it. At the beginning of their famous argument on HBO, Hopkins unbelievably wanted MORE than Roy. He said "Roy Jones can't expect to get more than Bernard Hopkins after the tournament." The guy was deluded. Of course he was unwilling to go to Germany. Why should Roy have gone to Germany? Roy Jones - 2001 "I don't think a knockout would be enough over there." Fairly or unfairly, Roy at the time WAS the unified 175 champ. He had all the belts and was considered the best fighter in the world. Ron obviously thought that Ruiz WAS a challenge! This was ten years ago. Who has accomplished the same feat since? NOBODY! Lets see ANY of today's 168-175 guys go up and fight a top 5 guy at HW. We'll be waiting a long time. Absolutely laughable! If Evander had beaten Ruiz late in 2001, Roy's first fight at HW would have been against Evander in 2002. I would have loved to have had a chat with Ron, after Roy's domination of Ruiz.
Everyone knows that Roy was more concerned with collecting trinkets whilst avoiding the big fights despite being juiced to the gills. He avoided big punchers and made a stack of money fighting bums whilst pulling the wool over a gullable nations eye courtesy of the HBO brainwashing station. It is what it is.
He makes some solid points but he isnt different from most top draw or big name fighters they all call the shots of when where and who is fought, Jones wasnt the first or last to do this Jones was great, maybe not as great as some say or as great as he could have been but still phenomenal regardless
Borges does make a lot of valid points about Jones. these are the same issues that most had with Jones back then. he cherry picked the easier fights because he was mentally weak. he's a great fighter who had a lot of skill, and he did beat some good fighters, i won't take that away from him... but he was a coward who should have done a lot more with the opportunities that were on offer for him. i disagree about giving rematch's to fighters who were slightly competitive, as he says, because no one was competitive enough to warrant a rematch. the only guy that he needed to have a second fight with was Griffen...and that happened. can you now put up YT videos? thought that wasn't allowed any more?
schooling??? i put him straight the other day but he doesn't want to know. he lives in his own world where his silly opinions count as fact. he's dreaming. that's why i ignore him. :deal
