If he'd beaten Benn and Eubank, and missed Johnson or Hill etc, they'd both be on here as guys Roy ducked. You can't fight everyone. I'll put Roy's resume up to almost anyone's from the same era/weight class. Roy's got a good resume.
Toney was overlooked because Roy had got nothing to prove, and Tarver had gotten to him mentally. I don't think he ducked Tarver in 2000. I know you do, and I can see why. But I think it was done purely to **** him off. But of course it backfired terribly. He certainly didn't duck Tarver late 2002, that's when the Ruiz negotiations were taking place. He'd already made his mind up to go to HW at that point. He was asked about Tarver after the Woods fight in Sept 2002. He said "The only thing that will stop the Tarver fight, is a John Ruiz fight."
No, he is an opinionated moron just like most on here... There was a legitimate argument against anything he said, some of which I believe to be pure bull****. He is just another man with an opinion. Didn't he pick Ruiz to beat Roy?
Nothing but fighters who had county jobs? Like Hopkins, Toney, Tate, Reggie Johnson, Griffin, Hill, Gonzalez, Harding, Tarver, Ruiz etc? If you want some info on Roy and Lewis, then go to the freelibrary.com and type their names into the search bar. Then scroll down to 2003. Poetic justice? Stalling out of Greed? Hopkins refused $6M. In 2002, Roy was at 175, with an eye on going up to HW. To fight Hopkins, he would had to have lost muscle to go down to a catchweight. There was no way that Roy was going to lose weight, to fight a guy who he hated, and who he'd already beaten for half the purse. There's no way Hopkins would have offered Roy 50/50 if he'd have beaten him in 1993. I'm sure you've seen the infamous argument on HBO that they had? Hopkins says "Roy Jones can't expect to get more than Bernard Hopkins after the tournament." That's how deluded Hopkins was. The only reason he agreed to fight Roy in 2010, was because he knew Roy was done and it satisfied his ego.
Yes I believe so, I'd have loved to have had a chat with him afterwards. Only a ****ing moron would say "I can't concede that Roy's a great fighter yet." atsch Wow!
Is that why he called Griffen on the phone and promised he a rematch if he got past Tarver? Source: The Tarver-Griffen fight It was a blatant duck. Writing letters to the ibf to force Tarver into a elimination bout. He never did that to Glen Kelly or any of the other mis-mandatories he faced over the years. Everytime a fight with a skilled tall rangy southpaw was put on the table Jones tried to get out of it. ????????? Tarver became his mandatory late 01 Jones had one year to make that fight and he refused it, it is the reason he was stripped off his belt late 02. Look at who he fought instead of Tarver during that period: (green)Woods and Glen Kelly http://www.secondsout.com/usa-boxing-news/usa-boxing-news/jones-stripped-of-ibf-crown He couldn't make a fight with Tarver 01-02 because he was going up to hw in 03? Does that make any sense to you? HBO pleaded with him to cancel the Woods fight. Jones wanted that fight to be a ppv fight mid July. They cancelled it. So he rescheduled it and fought Woods late Nov that year. If he was so serious about going up to hw why fight Woods at all? He would of still had to vacant the belts anyway he could of and should of fought Tarver instead.
Jones threatened to cancel the fight unless the weigh in was pushed forward to give Hill less time to rehydrate http://www.nytimes.com/1998/04/24/sports/boxing-the-jones-hill-battle-tips-off-at-weigh-in.html Completely out of order. Its one of the reason why I don't rate that win
No, it wasnt. McCallum had already lost the belt to Tiozzi who was the wbc lhw champion. In order to try and sell the fight HBO cut a deal with the wbc to make a belt available and that is why that fight was for the wbc interim belt http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...lum-wbc-president-jose-sulaiman-wbc-appointed After picking up the ibf smw belt Jones fought no one worth mentioning at that weight. If he had fought Hopkins again it would of been one of his better wins. See above
:rofl really... really... really? It's one thing not to care for a boxers fighting style or even their persona; however, somethings people post are puzzling and straight up comical.
Roy and his 'demands' for certain fighters are a joke. What fighters today demand morning of the fight weight ins? :huh What a complete joke he is. Writing letters to the IBF? :roflatsch Usually fighters do that to DEMAND a fight not try and dictate who their Mandatory will be :roflatsch
I'm sorry but I'm surprised at the hate you're spewing here. Plus you some of your facts and timeline are off. I think it's time you apply some common sense and rational thinking. Where do I begin? 1. Roy Jones was the undisputed champion in 2000. This meant that he often had to fulfill three mandatories and there were deadlines associated with that. Jones would often ask for extensions, delays, opt-outs, etc. in order to do so. In early 2000 Richard Hall was Jones' mandatory. Jones had another mandatory coming due against Antonio Tarver. In order to ensure that he wasn't stripped, he asked the IBF to hold a box-off between Tarver and Eric Harding, stating some BS about Tarver having little experience. This was to buy time so he could fulfill his other mandatory. Please note (something you left out) Jones' request was granted on the condition that he HAD to fight the winner of Tarver-Harding next. Jones agreed to the request and then Jones lived up to his word. 2. Antonio Tarver was never the mandatory in 2001. He didn't become the mandatory until early 2002, when he and Reggie Johnson fought in a title eliminator. Tarver, after beating Johnson, immediately signed on for a rematch against Eric Harding because, in his words, he felt he had to avenge that loss first. This occured in late July. 3. Jones began negotiating a match against Ruiz in late 2002. If you believe he was ducking Tarver by doing so, that's your business (and bias). Just remember that after beating Ruiz he fought Tarver. Then gave him an immediate rematch. Then after 14 months off, fought him again with no tune-up.
For once Borges was spot on the money I agree with him about Jones jr being a very talented boxer but not an ATG . ATG's fight all comers. Similar situation with Mayweather jr very talented boxer but will never be an ATG. Maybe its the Junior tag doing it LOL
general zod, You're far too harsh on Roy in my opinion. People can change their minds. Griffin fought Tarver early in 2003, just after Roy had beaten Ruiz. Tarver was mouthing off, and Roy at that time tried to ignore him. But Tarver continued to goad him all throughout the year at every opportunity and he really did get under Roy's skin, and in a way you've got to give him credit for that. He was constantly baiting Roy, and in the end, despite what Roy said in the build up to their fight, he really did **** him off. So in the end, Roy ignored any call for a CW fight with Toney and dropped back to 175. I respect your opinion, but I again, I think it was to get under Tarver's skin. They'd both been taking swipes at each other since they were 15. Tarver bashed Roy, and Roy said that Tarver should have been ashamed to go to the Olympics and beat up on kids etc. We both know that when Roy doesn't want to do something, then he doesn't do it. Now Eric Harding was a tall southpaw who beat Tarver in the eliminator. After which Roy fought him. Now I'm certain that had Tarver beaten Harding, Roy would have fought Tarver. Harding was just as hard to fight. I think the fact that he took on Harding with no issue, indicates that he'd have fought Tarver if he'd have won. Roy didn't know that Harding would win. So you can call it a duck, but we know that Roy DID fight Tarver three times. Now after the first fight, which Roy had won clearly while not a 100%, Roy agreed to a rematch, that he didn't have to agree too. Then after the Johnson knockout, he also agreed to the third fight, without having a tune up. So if he was absolutely content on not fighting him, then he wouldn't have done. I misread this originally. I thought you were saying that Roy ducked Tarver late in 2002. Again, I misread what you'd wrote. Like I've said, I think if Tarver had've won the eliminator, Roy would have fought him. The Woods fight was in September of 2002. Now we both know from your great links, that in 2001, Roy and HBO tried to make a DM fight, and I also know that Roy had talks with Evander at the end of the year, and he was also open to a Hopkins fight in 2002, if the split was right. So it's not like he dismissed/ducked Tarver, because he was a threat, and he was just content to feast on bums. They were other things happening in the background. But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter does it? Because again, in the end he fought Tarver. It's not like he avoided him, and never fought him. So I don't really see what the issue is.
