Excellent post! I watched alot of Roy's fights but not clear of the history of all that except the Darius BS. I remember him demanding Roy fly to fight him in his country opposed to coming to the champs country.
Roy Jones Jr in an all time great... Just look at his credentials.. Olympic silver medalist, though we all know he spanked the winner of that fight in one of the biggest robberies of all time. Titles in 4 different weight classes, MW-SMW-LHW-HW-LHW... Ring Magazine fighter of the decade.. Ring Magazine and general consensus P4P King for the better part of a decade. He knocked a now official Hall of famer out with a singe body shot, in his 4th weight class. He was the first MW in 106 years to win titles at MW, LHW and HW. Also one of the only ones I can remember dropping back to LHW and beating the champ in his very next fight. Also he held the ring LHW Championship, and the WBA HW championship at the same time!!! He beat over 20 former, future or current world Champions! He beat fellow ATG fighters in Toney and Hopkins.. Save a DQ loss, that he avenged in round 1 in spectacular fashion, he would have been to HW and back with a record of 50-0 before losing at the age of 35! Now, there are holes, there are fighters he missed, there are fights I would have loved to have seen.. But instead of putting all your thought in what he didn't do, look at what he did do.. If Roy Jones was not a great fighter, I don't know who is.. His credentials are very impressive, but even more impressive was his ability in the ring.. You are simply a hating fool, to deny that man his credit as being "great"
That's not very nice. What has he done in the last 7 years? Lets see: Beat Ajamu, beat undefeated Hanshaw, beat Trinidad, knocked down Calzaghe and retired him, defeated Sheika, turned back the clock and stopped Lacy, fought Danny Green in his backyard, took Bernard Hopkins to the woodshed knocked him down 3 times and proved he's still the better more entertaining fighter, gave a top cruiserweight in Lebedev a run for his money, staggering him in the 10th before getting stopped right at the end, beat journeyman Alexander then beat undefeated Glazewski. You've got to be trolling. Everyone knows that Roy Jones was one of if not the greatest boxer of all time. Even if you focus on the last 7 years where he's faded out of his prime, that still doesn't change that he was great in his prime, and the P4P king from the mid 90s to the early 2000s.
Lets look at his credentials. He took peds While taking peds he was scared to face anyone of note ducking them all Infact...no need to go any further..a cheat who takes peds should be erased from history.
I have never questioned Jones skill or ability. What I have questioned is his Chin and handpicking ways and reluctance to fight the very best in those various weight classes. Yes, he fought Hopkins and Toney but after that he didn't face a legit threat until the Tarver fight a span of how many years? :huh Jones simply did not fight the best fighters that were available to him. For some reason it is always Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda with Jones. I am sure he would have beat several of those fighters but there is a chance he would have had his Glass Jaw shattered also.
You're an idiot of the highest order. You can keep repeating yourself, over and over and over again. It won't make a difference. He only ducked/dismissed two fighters. There are valid reasons why the others didn't get made. But you refuse point blank to allow for any sort of boxing politics or circumstances, because it doesn't fit your agenda. So from Toney to Tarver, he didn't face a threat? Reggie Johnson Montell Griffin Virgil Hill Eric Harding John Ruiz Keep hating. :good
I hope you're not a Floyd Mayweather fan then. At least Roy had ATG Toney and Hopkins on his list during their primes. Two men that were deemed unbeatable by anyone else. The jump to heavyweight was epic and even though Ruiz is nowhere near an ATG, he was still a champ and would probably be a champ today with an even less competitive heavweight division. Had Roy have retired right then, I think he would be held in a much higher light, but for those that were fans during Roy's prime, they know how amazing he was. I think alot of people have the past 7 years in the forefront of their mind when they think of Roy. I only like to remember him during his prime, where he rarely lost a round, let alone a fight.
There were some holes, and periods where he didn't fight anybody.. Some of it his his fault, not all the way though, some of it was also business and other fighters' ego as well. The two biggest names for me would be Nigel Benn, and DM.. These are two I really would have loved to see, and would clear up much of the doubt people have.. Two winnable fights as well. But again, missing those two doesn't speak as loudly to me as what he was able to accomplish. Hopkins II would have been a big one too, but not as much since I think pre-HW Roy smokes Hopkins just like he did the first time.
yes, here's proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrHydFIwfBo borges is the biggest piece of crap out there, even for a boxing writer. hopefully borges will go down for being nothing more than an ******* and a plagiarist. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2007/03/globe_suspends.html
