Jones was proven guilty of 4 official ducks - Collins, DM, Nunn, Rocky, and will always be plagued by 4 cases suspicious avoidance - Jackson, McClellan, Benn, Liles. Borges however is the broken clock of boxing writers, who only gained some undeserving acclaim for Tyson-Holyfield in '96.
Official? Seriously, how many more times? I'm sick of typing the same things over and over again. With regards to DM, here are some great links, originally uploaded by general Zod. HBO wanted to stage a double header to promote the fight, but DM's promoter/advisor Peter Kohl wasn't interested. Promoter Kohl: "Michalczewski is not Undercard Roy Jones wants to "Tiger" in the context of program last updated: 12.07.2000 - 17:55 New York (sid) The latest idea from the camp of Profibox superstar Roy Jones Jr. would bring light heavyweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski crazy. The pay-TV giant HBO wants the 18th Title defense against WBO titlist David Telesco get into the Framework Programme of the World Cup of triple champion Jones against Eric Harding in New Orleans. This is the sale of the Jones fights in the HBO Pay-Per-View offshoot TVKO be boosted. "I find this idea perfectly. She is bold, but not outside the Realtität", HBO's executive director Kerry Davis said in the USA Today newspaper. For the fight against the unattractive Harding to the TV fans shell out the equivalent of 70 marks proud. Participation by Michalczewski would significantly enhance the event. "It's a great idea, and Roy is interested in," said Jones-lawyer Stan Levin and presented Michalczewski then even a title unification with Jones promised, "If he makes the first move, would Roy in turn seriously considering a fight in Germany do. " Michalczewski wants to crown has long been a fight against Roy Jones, to the best light heavyweight in the world. The Hamburg promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl had the WBC WBA IBF champion made an offer over ten million dollars, Jones calls but twice. Michalczewski, whose fight against Telesco also on 9 September was held last week scolded again that Jones would chicken out before him. Kohl is HBO's offer, however, still skeptical. "Dariusz is no Undercard Fighter Like the American television network Roy Jones would like to see as the main fighters, the Germans also want Dariusz as an attraction also are financial issues not clarified why should Dariusz.. always suffer a disadvantage? " Also, in 2001, Roy's advisor Brad Jacobs, met with HBO representatives to discuss the fight, but they couldn't get Kohl to negotiate. In the works: German promoter Peter Kohl is coming to New York next week to meet with representatives for Roy Jones Jr., including executives with HBO, to discuss a meeting between Jones and Dariusz Michalczewski. It is the most positive sign yet that a deal can be worked out. Brad Jacobs, the manager for Jones, said yesterday that there had been little progress in his efforts to get Kohl to even come up with a counter-offer to two proposals he has sent him. Jacobs said there hadn't even been any telephone conversations between himself and Kohl. Kohl rejected his offers through the mail. Kerry Davis from HBO hasn’t talked to him in nearly a month, so I don’t know where he can come off and say anything like that since we haven’t had any conversations.” http://www.secondsout.com/columns/paul-upham/jacobs-rejects-kohls-jones-michalczewski-claim With Jones contracted to HBO for five more fights and his star fading, the network realizes that Michalczewski is the one opponent who can help rejuvenate interest in him. After the Harmon bout, HBO's Kery Davis said he would go all out to put the bout together. "We've tried to solicit a number from them to give us a starting point in negotiations, but I can't even get Kohl on the phone," Davis said. "We can't even get him to give us an absurd number to start the ball rolling. But we're trying." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2001-02-28-jones.htm Jones is fighting Gonzalez on PPV in part because his HBO deal calls for only two fights a year. HBO is saving the second one for a possible Michalczewski bout. "This allows me to keep that fight on course for later this year," HBO's Kery Davis said. "If he fights a summer bout on HBO, it doesn't leave money for a Michalczewski fight, and I want that fight on HBO." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2001-04-02-jones.htm "He needs a big fight," said Kery Davis, HBO senior VP of programming. "There's nothing else to say. That's the bottom line." Lining that up will be difficult because two fighters fans want to see him meet - Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad - have signed on for a middleweight unification tournament. And Dariusz Michalczewski, a Polish light heavyweight who boxes primarily in Germany, is refusing the come to the U.S. to fight Jones. And Jones has said that he isn't going to Germany to meet Michalczewski. Jones doesn't even believe a KO against Michalczewski is enough in Germany.(Graciano I fight comes to mind) Davis said Michalczewski and his promoter, Peter Kohl, have made negotiating difficult. But HBO is moving in that direction. "It's Michalczewski or bust," Davis said. "We've been trying to make this fight for weeks." http://articles.nydailynews.com/2001-02-26/sports/18177039_1_jones-dariusz-michalczewski-big-fight Thanks to general zod for the links. Below is an article from 2003, where Roy's former promoter Murad Muhammad, discusses what DM was making, and what he wanted to fight Roy. http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=10&cad=rja&ved=0CG0QFjAJ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.secondsout.com%2Fusa-boxing-news%2Fusa-boxing-news%2Fmurad-muhammad-jones-v-ruiz-is-99-done&ei=6-_JUIrRKamA0AW08oGYBw&usg=AFQjCNHtu1lAhg-zmZufpaPl5RzXOY4JTg Also, below is an interview with Roy from June of last year whilst preparing for his fight with Pawel Glazewski in Poland. Go to 6.05 of the video. He says that DM turned down $5M from HBO. http://youtu.be/JWgQYK16wNQ Finally, go and look at DM's resume. It speaks volumes. It shows you exactly what his intentions were. He was unfairly stripped of his WBA and IBF belts, yet when he had the chance to get them back, and to earn $5M, he turned down the opportunity, to instead fight the likes of Joey De Grandis for $1-1.5M. I agree that he ducked Nunn, but Collins was dismissed in my opinion, and there's a big difference between ducking someone and dismissing someone. Fights with McClellan and Jackson were never really viable at 160. Roy was held back by his father, and was fighting nobodies in Pensacola for peanuts. Fred Levin offered Roy title opportunities, but Roy's father wasn't even informing Roy of them. He was then going back to Levin and pretending he'd spoke with Roy, and Roy wasn't interested. So Roy was going nowhere. Then in 1992, they had a huge bust up, and parted ways. It was only at that point that Roy started to make progress. He signed with HBO, started to fight better opponents, such as Jorge Castro, and then in 93, he was given a title opportunity against Hopkins. The only trouble was, that after he'd beaten Hopkins, he was struggling to make weight at 24 going on 25. He had four fights after Hopkins, but only had one title defence against Thomas Tate. He fought guys like Malinga, weighing as a high as 167. After Tate, he moved up for Toney in Nov 94. So, he missed all of the great potential fights at 160. While guys like Toney, McCallum, Nunn, Johnson, Jackson and McCllellan were all facing each other, Roy had been fighting the likes Lester Yardbrough and Kevin Daigle. So he can't be accused of ducking anyone at 160. At 168, McClellan unfortunately only had the one fight, which tragically was against Benn. Benn and Liles were King fighters, and according to Roy and Greg Fitz, King wanted future options on Benn. Also, The Levin's, who handled Roy back then, were very reluctant to deal with King. So Roy did miss a few guys, but he wasn't a serial ducker. There were valid reasons and certain circumstances as to why certain fights weren't signed.
I'm aware of all those links mate. General Sod only posted half of the info - incidentally your favourite half - plus Sod's opinions also tend to be 50% bollocks. Murad "The World's Most Stupid Man" Muhammad is also one of the least credible sources in boxing. When I have time I'll research all possible info on the Dm-Jones negotiations to create an official Team Elite Superthread on the subject.
It's up to what you believe. But there was no valid reason for DM to turn down Kerry Davis's offer of the double header. The whole - "We don't want to play second fiddle to Roy" stuff was complete nonsense. There would have been a huge fight afterwards, for huge money, and for every belt at 175. A guy who wanted his old belts back, would never have turned down that opportunity to instead fight Harmon, Hall (who Roy had already beaten) and De Grandis. Kerry Davis was under enormous pressure from HBO, and wasn't part of Roy's team. So there would have been no reason to lie about anything. He was objective. Also, Roy was never going to go to Germany, and he made that abundantly clear. He'd had his fingers burnt from the Olympics in Seoul, and Germany was notorious for bad decisions. If you don't believe Roy and Murad's version of events, I can respect that, although they seem genuine to me. But there should be no reason not to believe Kerry Davis's statements, and again, if you look at DM's resume, and look at who he fought and when, it's clear to me exactly what his intentions were. He was content defending his WBO belt in Germany for decent money, just how Calzaghe did in the U.K.
Who? Anyone, these pundits of sort should keep their mouths shut. Fewer and fewer actually are boxing experts. Respect the fighter.
The guy he officially ducked was Michael Nunn. Nunn was mandatory challenger and Jones gave up the WBC title instead of facing him. Nunn would've beaten him. He was better than Jones at his best.
The Jones-Ruiz fight was a total joke. Ruiz was a handpicked opponent who was flat footed had no skills and no power who hadn't had a KO in nearly 5 years. The fight was like a sparring session. Total joke.
