This is a fun vid...and it should remind everyone about what a monster puncher Ron Lyle was. This content is protected
And yet Bummy Davis repeatedly tells us that Lyle wasn't a puncher! Mind you, i stopped taking him seriously a long time ago.
From his fight with Foreman it became obvious to me that Lyle is one of the hardest punchers in Boxing history. He just didnt have the word class skills that are needed.
Great video, thanks, It gives me the opportunity to ask a question? What happened to the specialist? Meaning, the tremendous punchers like,Lyle,Shavers,Briscoe,Zale,Hart, Garza,Zarate,Olivaires,Mugabi, The super stylist, like Pep,Davis jr,Whitaker, Laguna, defensive specialist like Benitez. Pressure fighters like Frazier,Armstrong,Pryor . Slick maulers like Pederoza. Seems to me at least, all fighters are basically fighting the same way in today's game. Orthodox, or south paw's from Heavy to fly, most of the fighters in today's game, fight the same way. It could be me.
Bummy never said that. Bummy said he had power but it's questionable he could stop a guy like Maricano. You can be a powerful puncher and not a knockout artist. Lyle's best knockout wins: Shavers Mathis Middleton Kirkman-on a cut after 8 rounds of sustained punishment. no KDs. Lyle's best decision wins: Bonavena Bugner Peralta Middleton Ellis LeDoux Lyle is tremendously underrated as a technician and perhaps overrated as a killer puncher. He outboxed Ali before running out of gas and in truth, and he was outboxing and hurt Foreman with crisp counters and combinations, he just couldn't stop Foreman from forcing it into a war.
Excellent question...I wish one of our acknowledged boxing brains here would expound on this in a future thread. The varieties of specialists has always fascinated me....just defensive specialists alone, with the varieties within that category alone. One of the boxing magazines years ago had a feature on the many kinds of defensive specialists.
That ko of Shavers has always chilled me...it seemed that he could have killed Earnie with that last fight to the side of the head. What a deadly looking punch.
Anyone living through that time will tell you what a brutal puncher especially with his right hand Lyle was. While in prison Lyle developed power by punching the walls of his cell with his fists wrapped in towels and push-ups, 1000 at a time.
