Both at their v best, who wins in the battle of the contenders? My own thoughts are, Lyle pounds away at Tua and takes his best shots, David ends up fighting most of the fight outa his defensive shell.
Lyle is fairly well rounded boxer. Can slug or use his jab to box. Power in both hands. Heart of a lion and can apply tons of pressure and volume or load up for a big shot. He could sometimes get fooled by feints and neglects his defense in brawls. Tua had underrated ring IQ, rock solid chin with underrated defense, slegdehammer hook, and very scary when he has you om the ropes. His problem was his short height, will sometimes rely too much on his hook, can get frustrated with cagey opponents that make adjustments, and tended to go in his shell if he was badly hurt. I think this depends on what happens when the first big bomb lands. If Lyle lands a huge hit early, Tua may respond back with something hard and we could end up with a fight similar to the Ibeabuchi one. However, if Lyle creates some space and loads up for big shots (and lands) while being willing to take hits Tua's response would depend on how Lyle handles it. If Lyle can handle his power and continues slugging with no fear, Tua may become demoralized and back off; trying to convince Lyle to take it down a notch. If Lyle can't handle it and gets dropped, Tua would jump all over him. However ,Tua may not be a good enough finisher to break down a guy as vicious and courageous as Lyle--who definitely gets off the floor at least once and knew how to cover up long enough to survive. The funny thing is Lyle is no fool and wouldn't just swing for the fences if Tua covered up (he refused to engage with Ali's rope a dope knowing he needed to save energy). If that happened I think Lyle's longer reach and higher ring IQ would give him a slight edge and he'd land more to win a close decision (he was busier than Tua). -Overall I favor Lyle to win by decision 40% of the time due to his scrappyness, work rate, and reach. -Tua wins by KO within 8 rounds 30% of the time if he can catch Lyle consistently and not let him off the hook (pun intended). -20% chance of a very ugly mud fight with both guys smothering each other's work and a split decision either way. -Lyle wins by late round TKO 10% of the time if he can dig into the body and drag Tua into deep waters pounding away at every inch of his body,
Can't fault any of that really. Obviously there's a chance that Tua can ko Lyle, Ron wasn't invincible by a long shot, I just see Ron going wild at him, determined to really prove a point to Tua and getting him to think twice about opening up to much.
I suspect that Lyle would outbox Tua, to take a decision. It might look a bit like the second Rahman fight.
Tua quite easily IMO probably 5-6 rounds at best. But it is fun seeing that Lyle (and maybe Cleveland Williams) has surpassed Tua as the most overrated HW on this forum.
Hard fight to pick imo..Lyle was more well rounded but I do think Tua when he was younger would be up for a hard head on fight. It's an intriguing matchup. I see Lyle moving an jabbing to start with then gets cocky, then it's telephone box stuff. It could end up being a classic
Lyle is a good boxer and slugger, but Tua would out brawl him in that sort of fight and while Lyle is a good boxer, it is his hands what he is good with, he does not have very good movement and he is like 30lbs lighter than Tua and when Tua hits him, and he would, it is game over because Lyle could not avoid him for 12 rounds like Lewis , Ibeabuchi brawled with him, but he was similar size to Tua which made him able to stand up to the punches and take them without being shook Story of the fight, Lyle tries to box at range with the jab, but because of his lack of movement, he is forced into a brawl and Tua catches him most likely with a left hook and KO’s him
Idk how you can possibly say Tua was "30 lbs heavier" than Lyle. In Tua's best performances against Ike he was 226, against Rahman he was 224, against Ruiz he was 219. Once Tua started weighing north of 230+ he was often very slow, lazy, and lacked that killer instinct and dropped many decisions and lost fights he could have won. Lyle in comparison was 216 against Mathis and Shavers, 218 against Bugner, 220 against Foreman. Outside of Tua vs Moore where he weighed 243, most of Tua's best performances are in the 220 range. I don't get why people act like Tua was a super heavyweight when he was quite chunky and flabby at those weights and often lost fights or looked bad. Either way, he certainly isnt 30 lbs bigger than Lyle nor would be dwarfing him in terms of mass if he's actually in shape. Claiming Lyle would attempt to box at range and use jabs and movement against Tua suggests you have never seen a Lyle fight.
I think Lyle beats Tua to the punch and is in control until the last two rounds. Tua closes the gap but Lyle holds him off matching punches at times. I have Lyle winning a unanimous decision 114-110,114-111,116-113.
Lyle UD Tua doesnt know how to cut the ring off. Hes bothered by a half decent jab. Just not busy enough. Lyle is better IMO and tougher. Lyle UD
