There's lots of Lyle love on this site, but I think he'd have his hands full in this one. Who do you guys like?

Most will favor Lyle ( as will I ). He did after all rise off the canvas to dispatch Earnie Shavers and battled life and death with a prime Foreman, before losing in one of the most gallant efforts in heavyweight history..... James " bonecrusher " Smith, however was no slouch, for as lacking as his resume may be to some. He was a devastating puncher when he needed to be, could box the distance, take a big punch and proved as being dangerous well into old age.. In addition, he was a giant at 6'5", 235 lbs ( when in shape ), and had dispatched top rank fighters as early as the first round, while also taking the very best the distance..

Don't know who wins, but I guess Lyle should be favored primarily by his notable losing effort to Foreman and comeback win off the canvas against Shavers.. But if we think about it, a losing effort and life saving comeback isn't much to go by.... A more honest answer would be that it could go either way.....

I think Lyle takes a very close decision in this one.At his best, no one floored Bonecrusher, and I could see him giving Ron fits.It could, truly, go either way.

Not that much love , almost every1 here had him below both Shavers & Young , especially Young . There was a thread about sorting them 3 alone .

My first instinct told me Smith of course , he stopped Bruno & Witherspoon (IDK if Witherspoon took a dive there or not) & took Tyson d distance .
But then he was a lesser George Foreman , which I once thought about Lyle as well . But then I know how Lyle performed vs d real Foreman ,
but then Lyle was stopped by Ali . So I think it could have gone either way . Both were late starters btw .

Let's look at the best KO wins of both of these punchers...

    Bonecrusher:

    KO1 Witherspoon

    KO10 Bruno

    TKO1 Weaver

    Lyle

    KO2 Mathis

    TKO6 Shavers

Yes, a good point. Lyle's one of my favorites, and I think he could win this, but I could also easily see him losing it. Bonecrusher was bigger, hit just as hard, and dare I say, I think may have held an edge in durability here. Lyle's edge is that I think overall he might've been a bit more dynamic. This fight could be a thrilling war or a sloppy maul-fest. It's pretty hard to make a strong case either way, though.

Nobody said he had superior KO wins, but superior wins he did (Bugner, Bonavena, Ellis).

If there was one thing that James Smith could do, it was to punch. That was about it. He was losing every second of every round until getting Bruno out of there with a minute left in the fight. Witherspoon beat him the first time, and has recently said he pretty much threw the rematch. Smith did beat Weaver, when Weaver was 35 years old.
