This was a very good action packed fight and one that I believe to be underrated as it doesn't get mentioned much. Two good contenders who were both more or less in their primes battling it out. Shavers decked Lyle in the second round with a left hand which expels the myth that he only had power in his right. Lyle came back in the 6th to absolutely hammer a tired Shavers. Great match. Shavers at that time was a complete seek and destroy/kill or be killed hwt. He altered his style when he fought Ali with the intent of turning up the steam LATEBin the fight to turn the tables on Ali.....it almost worked. The emphasis always was the power of Shavers right but Earnie certainly mentioned during the 70's that his favorite/best punch was his left hook.
Two really bad dudes. Amazing, you see two "over 200 lb Heavies" show up in excellent shape and give it their all for the fans (compared to "today"). Both guys would probably win some version of the Heavyweight Title today if they were fighting now.
Even the brain dead Foreman (post-Ali) would have laid Shavers into a puddle like he did Lyle. No one could KO Foreman (forget Zaire for pete sakes). But this thread does mention Earnie's left hook, a monster that largely is underrated.
