Not at all. Just noting the usual overrating of Ike Ibeabuchi on here.

I think you can put forward quite decent arguments for either. A lot depends on what you think of David Tua.

I would say that Ike was not at contender stage when he went to prison he was just coming out of the development (Get experience with different styles) stage and in the testing stage (Fighting tough durable top 10 talent) stage and to consider that had he been sane what he may have been....IMO after seeing Tua spark some top fighters standing in the center of the ring and out fighting Tua at his game was impressive.

Gift stoppage? He wasn't fighting back,I cant see much wrong with the ref's decision here.

    Indeed.

Ibeabuchi had reduced Byrd to a serious dribbler. He was done.

Ike was in two fights he was not guaranteed to win, but he did. Surely that shows resolve?

Compared to Lyle who lost a number of high profile fights to my knowledge.

    Gift stoppage?

Did you see the drool fly out of Byrds mouth when he got caught by that uppercut?

But it’s two fights. That’s it!

That means nothing. People's mouths have spit in it. Have it open a little and take a punch from Ibeabuchi and you'd be lucky if drool was all that comes out.

It doesn't matter if he was throwing punches at the moment. What matters is that he was able to defend himself and the film clearly shows Byrd slipping most of Ibeabuchi's punches.

Yes its impressive but at the end of the day it was one win and its not like Tua hadn't been exposed before. In fact he had been exposed on multiple occasions prior to that fight.

Byrd himself doesnt complain about the stopage today. Hes admitted to being completely out of it from that shot in an interview.
The sum of the parts we saw against Byrd and Tua is enough to beat lyle.
Doesnt matter if its only 2 fights. We know he has physical strength, incredible stamina, a good chin, solid technique and punch selection and good power.

You dont have to be an ATG to beat Lyle.

What essential quality is there that is necessary to beat Lyle which Ike didnt show in those 2 fights? Since lyle has been both outbanged and outboxed, the only real essential to beat him is a good chin if youre gonna bang and also good stamina if youre gonna box . Ike showed both physical properties in abundance and also showed he could bang and box depending on the opponent.
im not sure what previously undiscovered deal-breaking weakness of Ike's could possibly have been exposed against Lyle that wouldnt have been exposed against Tua and Byrd.

Sure, there are levels to bpxing and against Lennox Lewis we would have found out if Ike was just a solid contender or an ATG, but even if you just conclude the bare minimum out of the tua and byrd fights without any "optimistic interpretation" its already enough to pick him over lyle. For me at least.

So would the "OMG Ike's an ATG now" crowd have considered it ridiculous to pick pre-Frazier Foreman over Lyle?

The problem is that tua and byrd are nothing in history and the win over tua is debatable . lyle did pretty well against an all time great and was close to stop him, bonavena, bugner and shavers were as good wins for lyle if not better than tua and byrd for ike. Lyle has more credentials against better opposition
