First off I really really hate posting a HW matchup This one is one that just actually sounded good for a change. I'm sure it's been done so no need to tell me that but not in many yrs as opposed to months as far as I can tell as I didnt bother to check simply because I haven't seen it.
Getting back to the fight. Going through some recent matchups I feel Baer is overrated on this particular forum. To sum it up hes sloppy. Yes yes I keep hearing about his God given talent well except for a few occasions he didn't use it so I dont really care. At the highest level he was sloppy and inconsistent despite holding most of the physical advantages over his opponents.
Going with with Lyle here maybe even with an early blitz KO. Lyle faced the better competition and he split with arguably the 2 biggest punchers the division ever saw. Theres the possibility of Baer taking him deep but me thinks Lyle makes it a brawl. Lyle KO 6

I agree with you, Robert. Lyle wins this. Not sure if he wins by KO. But, Lyle is perfectly capable of winning a decision here, as well if he doesn't stop Max.

Lyle could go toe to toe with some of the most brutal power punchers in history. I see no reason why he couldn't beat Baer more often than not. I'd say he'd take seven out of ten, if not eight. Baer on his very best day could maybe take a few of the series, but Lyle could take his power and outbox him too.

Regardless, it's an interesting matchup to consider.

Baer is ridiculously over rated by many based on handicapping his talent but this is an interesting fight .. he has the better chin vs Lyle who I just cannot forgive for absolutely freezing against Ali .. terrific match Robert

Lyle beats him to the punch consistently.

Baer is stopped in the early/mid rounds.

I think this is the main issue here in this matchup. Lyle was a game fighter and had no quit in him. Baer tended to goof off. You can make all the praise you want for baer's natural ability and power, but mentally he's not on lyles level and if it becomes a fire fight i cant count on him.

I think Baer stands a decent chance. I'll call it 50/50. Max's power was not the imagination of some rube or hayseed. It was real. As was his fighting spirit which was top notch. I would spend a paycheck for this one.

Baer's effort varied, & he was good at setting traps, not a very good boxer.
His power was top notch as was Lyle, & he holds the edge in chin & endurance...

This would not be enough for me to favor him though. If he was always very motivated, I might make it 50-50.
As it stands, closer to losing 7 out of 10.

I should have included Carnera and Marciano in this thread if so I sadly would have been on page 10 by now. My how times have changed.

It's a good match-up and I think a betting man would want to back Lyle, here. He was the better Boxer and his traditional, Boxer-Puncher consistency would see him through against the more erratic Baer.

Both have power in the right-hand and Max could have his Shavers moment with Lyle. But, I reckon Ron could survive such a moment, whereas I think Max might suffer more at the fists of Lyle.

ps - Lyle would have battered Carnera, too.

Ahhhh...I am not really a fan of the HW’s in general or either of these guys in particular...but I will take a stab,

I think it is very evenly matched as evidenced by some who hate fighters of the past giving Baer a legitimate shot in this. I do think myself that it is evenly matched and might not see either guy as a betting favorite. I would lean towards Baer stopping him in 8-10 but not confident in my pick, not will I be upset if the consensus goes the other way

I think that if Baer exploded he could freeze up Lyle and take him out ..

Max Baer is the greater fighter by a country mile.

Ron Lyle has the stylistic advantage!

    Take your pick!
