well look at the legendary punchers. a lot of them faced glass chinned fighters. lyle didn't face so many. and lyle also had the disadvantage by facing Young, Ali, Foreman, Bugner, Shavers, Quarry, Johnson, Bonavena, Gregorio Peralta and others.. I'm hardly a george foreman fan and i still say Lyle had a big punch
Lyle's power had been overrated before but now I feel it's almost being underrated here. He did put down Foreman face first on the canvas and scored a number of highlight reel knockouts over lesser opposition. The KO over Duane Bobick was downright scary.
I respectfully disagree. Lyle was a devastating puncher, when he delivered his punches cleanly. Lyle didn't always score knockouts because his opponents went into defensive shells, or ran all night, once they felt his power. Joe Bugner -- one of the most durable heavyweights of his era -- ranked Lyle as one of the hardest punchers he ever met. In my opinion, Lyle was the third hardest puncher of his generation, right behind Foreman and Shavers. As for Lyle vs. Peter, I say Lyle wins by mid or late round stoppage. It would have been a total war, and possibly Lyle hits the canvas in the early rounds. Peter would have his moments. But Peter could not absorb the full impact of Lyle's bombs. Remember also that Lyle was a better boxer than Peter. Thus, a Lyle kayo victory would be inevitable.
Brutal ko as an amateur. Left him in a heap and it really put Lyle on the map. He didn't stay as an amateur long after that and turned pro. Like everyone else though, he'd have had a tough time with Stevenson in 72.
Lyle looks almost Ali-esque with his handspeed and combinations in that video, great bolo punch. I need to reaquate myself with him, think I'll start with the Shavers fight
Lyle should decision him...but if Peter shows up game like in the first Wlad fight he might sucker Ron into a brawl where anything can happen.
Lyle had to hit Shavers with everything but the kitchen sink for 6 rounds before he finally fell over after basically punching himself out. Lyle never knocked out anybody. The Foreman fight is awesome but if he really hit as hard as his reputation indicates (and that fight) he would of had more knockouts. Shavers was the only ranked fighter he ever stopped. Like I said, Lyle was a good boxer with good power.
So what? He faced Joe Frazier the following year and destroyed him. Speaking of that fight Frazier did land some good left hooks and foreman took them better then he took lyle's. What does that say about lyle's punching power?
