Everything Lyle does Liston can do better. The only advantage Lyle would have is in height and weight and even that is so small it is negligible.

    Liston KO 6

As rugged and hard a hitter as Lyle was, prime Liston would stop him in 3 as brutally as he did Cleveland Williams. Almost a foregone conclusion.

I think Lyle took a better punch than Williams, may have had better power, and was certainly a little more skilled... He also lost to better fighters in more competitive fashion.. I think Lyle was better, but maybe I shouldn't have used the phrase " a lot better "...

I don't think he had more power.

Ron Lyle might be skilled, but Williams certainly was the better combination puncher.
If he is better, then it's very close.

Liston had some head movement and defense. Lyle is not going to last here. Liston wins inside of 6 rounds.

I'm abit suprised about Dempsey's quote, that Sonny didn't like men who stood up to him-based on the one who really did, Cleveland Williams, and how Sonny came roaring back after Williams threw everything he had at him.

For Christ' sake people, who was the best fighter Lyle ever KO'd? Please stop going on about his power.

I really hope the writer here comes back and comments because I've seen him say some of these things before,,,,who is the fighter who stood up to him, the one's he talks of, of whom Liston then shut down and lost too? You have said it several times so now its time to put down their names. Next he said in another post that Sonny's jab only was effective against smaller fighters,,,does he not know William's was taller 6.3 to 6.0 and that Sonny used his jab effectively throughout both bouts? He mentions Marshall whom Sonny fought early on and had a broken jaw. He down grades Sonny's headmovement which was not bad at all. Maybe he knows his stuff but he sure hasn't shown it in his posts on Liston.

Sonny Liston is my favorite,I admit bias.I also admit I have trouble thinking,Bonavena who got floored by Ellis, and stopped by Ali,both lighter hitting than Liston would beat Sonny.Ofcourse I think Liston takes Holmes,Forman, Frazier etc.

It's an interesting fight ... Lyle was bigger , just as strong and just as hard hitting as Williams .. Cleveland was faster but Lyle took a better punch ... Sonny was simply better overall but he'd have to be careful ... he would let his jab dictate the fight and win a decision most likely ...

In addition Lyle did better against Ali than Liston and would have never been stopped by a Leotis Martin , but Liston was not like Tyson , it is an insult to Tyson whom had a much better chin and a better technique.
Lyle wins. maybe by decision as he lost a decision to Quarry , maybe by stoppage as he stopped Shavers and floored Foreman.
