Ah,Leotis Martin, I am sure he is in the happy hunting ground rejoicing in the fact that every time Sonny Liston gets brought up Leotis gets brought into the picture for beating the fighter that retired him.I don't know if Lyle would have got knocked out by Martin, then again,I don't think Liston woulda got knocked out by Cooney like Lyle did.

It's tough to say what would happen in fights like this, but
a very interesting match-up. Lyle just may shock some people
with a mid to late round k.o. If it goes the distance, I'd probably give it to Liston.

Liston was much better then given credit for. While he wasn't the biggest guy, he has the power of George Foreman, coupled with his ATG jab, left hook, and uppercut.
Lyle's advantages basically are size and height. Liston is stronger IMO, and has better power, skills, and a longer reach and jab to outpoint Liston.
Liston would be far too careful and patient to allow himself to get in a slugfest like Foreman. He would only go after Lyle if he had him hurt. Similar to the way he broke down Williams. I think it would be harder because Williams had massive heart and he had a better chin.

Liston would outclass lyle. It would be one sided. Sorry Foreman fans, but Liston was quite a bit more well rounded than Foreman, and just as powerful.

Liston by mid round TKO in a tough fight but one that plays right into his hands. I personally can't see Liston quitting against a man he can hit, and Lyle can be hit. The left hook could do the job, as it almost did for Shavers.

You must be either Patterson or Cleveland Williams' kid. Let it go man! You can't change the past and to let it overwelm you is bad. Big bad Sonny scared your boy and with his 84 inch reach would run roughshod over the heavies of the early to mid 70's in his prime.

Cooney would have been the first white boy to really whoop Liston , Liston would have been his fourth victim. Everyone who managed to stop Lyle was taller than Liston , Cooney would have definitely outgun the smaller thug and besides , Lyle was old against Cooney , it was really not a prime Lyle .

    Lyle > Liston.
    See Ali.
Lyle managed (although hardly) to KO a better version (although with a slightly weaker chin) of Liston in Earnie Shavers.
Lyle knocked down Foreman who had a better chin , better effective reach and better punching power than Liston , so if he got to Foreman and Shavers , he would have gotten Liston .
Liston could not stop Eddie Machen , why would anyone think he could have stopped Ron Lyle ?

Yeah... i would like to see Lyle be in Liston's position when he fought Ali... Lyle was in his prime condition... And Ali was still not the Ali of 66'.
Earnie shavers is not better then Liston. I garunteee Liston would knock him out.
Yeah, MAYBE Foreman has better power, but he does not have a better chin and reach imo.
Liston has a longer reach you dip****... You're stupid. Liston would beat Foreman.
I'll tell you why. Lyle was right there to be hit with left hooks and right hands. it takes speed to beat liston. Lyle doesnt have it.
