You could say Lyle would or could have been a champion in just about every decade of boxing. As it was he was in an era Ali and Foreman, though it should be noted he was out boxing Ali until Ali landed one of his best right hands in round 11. A minority fell the stoppage was pre-mature. Lyle also had Foreman down and hurt. How would Lyle do in 1980s if he was in his prime these ten? Pinklon Thomas Greg Page Larry Holmes Mike Tyson Tim Witherpsoon Mike Dokes Gerry C00ney Mike Weaver Tony Tucker Buster Douglas
Larry Holmes and Iron Mike are potential losses . I would not be shocked to see either 1 of those men to get the best of Lyle . Lyle would gladly trade with Tyson in a heartbeat and that would be highly dangerous for either man .
Lyle was a puncher with good skill. He was once pronounced dead in a prison, then came back to life. I do not think he would be scared by Tyson. I'd favor him in five matches.
Lyle was Pure Brute strength . Use to do a 1,000 pushups in jail to kill time . The man was Manhandling Prime Foreman in a power fight sending him to the canvas 2x ! How many men walking on this earth can say they done that to Big George ? He walked threw Earnie Shavers best powershots and took Earnie out by stoppage . In Ron Lyles eyes , Mike Tyson would be nothing . But I would Admit , Ron thinking that way could potentially be fatal for him . Mike was fast with beautiful head movement , and with serious power .
Thomas, ****ey, Weaver, Tucker, and Douglas, Lyle beats by decision, though he could stop Buster late. Holmes and Tyson he loses to flat out.Witherspoon, Dokes, and Page is a 50/50 concept. Dokes doesn't have the power to hurt Ron, but his speed and toughness could be a problem.Witherspoon's right could be a tremendous problem for Ron, but if the unmotivated and out-of-shape Tim shows up, it's in Ron's favor for a UD.Ron definitely wouldn't outbox Greg, and like Dokes, Greg's speed could be a problem, in addition to his underrated power. But if the best version of Page doesn't show up, Ron takes a UD by bullying Page and not allowing him to get off.
You can say he knocked out more than one ranked contender outside of Shavers. Garcia was ranked #8 in Ring annual ratings Middleton was ranked 10th in Ring annual ratings
These two met on the fifteenth of August 1973. Garcia was ranked #10, not #8, in March 1973. Garcia lost, by first round knockout, to the unranked Joe Alexander in May of 1973. In other words, Garcia needed to sustain his #10 ranking past a 1 round KO of an unranked fighter. Didn't happen. Middleton met Lyle in December of 1972 and October of 1973. Middleton was unranked in March of 1971: Muhammad Ali George Foreman Oscar Bonavena Jerry Quarry Mac Foster Henry Cooper George Chuvalo Sonny Liston Jose Ibar Urtain Jose Luis Garcia March of 1972: Muhammad Ali Jerry Quarry George Foreman Oscar Bonavena Mac Foster Jimmy Ellis Floyd Patterson Jose Luis Garcia Jack Bodell Joe Bugner March of 1973: Muhammad Ali George Foreman Jimmy Ellis Ron Lyle Floyd Patterson Ernie Terrell Jose Roman Joe Bugner Ken Norton Jose Luis Garcia Or March of 1974: Muhammad Ali Joe Frazier Ken Norton Jerry Quarry Ron Lyle Earnie Shavers Oscar Bonavena Joe Bugner Jimmy Ellis Chuck Wepner So, no.
Lyle would fit in with that group but he wins and loses to the same group, he would not be a stand out. I was in Lyle's dressing room before the Quarry fight in MSG and In ****ey's dressing room before their match at the Coliseum. Lyle's best 2 fights were Shavers (Shavers winded) and a losing effort to Foreman.
