    I can’t recall seeing a more obese ref. He would’ve expired very quickly if he had ref’d tbe Maxim vs Robinson match - but then again, the sheds they fought in back then would’ve been pretty hot - especially in Australia.

    According to one biographical sketch, Joe Wallis was a boxing referee from 1914 to 1949, including being the house referee for Stadiums Ltd. from 1919 to 1949. It is hard to believe, but he once fought as a featherweight!

    It looks like that Joe Wallis refereed bouts until 1950, not 1949. BoxRec lists a total of 5,371 bouts that he refereed.
