He fought here in an unlicensed gloved up fight and lost to Roy Pretty Boy Shaw. That aside.. Was he any good...
He was a tough dude with a decent punch and solid chin. He was also a bleeder and had lifestyle issues such as drinking and poor training habits. His skills were limited but he was fearless and always came to fight.
Depends on whether he was motivated or not. When he was and bothered to train, I'd say he was a formidable early to mid 70's heavyweight because he was rock solid tough and could take a punch and also was a pretty rugged puncher. He beat Shavers and gave Frazier some strong rounds and laid out a pretty talented up-and-comer in Morris Jackson on the good side of his resume. By the later 70's he was slower, pudgier, pretty stationary, and was getting outclassed by local main eventers that you may not even remember regularly. I think if you watch the Frazier fight, even though he got pounded by an ATG champ, you'll see how good he could have been overall, but he lived to hang out in the local taverns in Omaha.
Very strong man, obviously better on the street than he ever was in the ring. but like others have said good enough at times to chin world class pros as a boxer. He's what I call a world class hard man. He went as far as that kind of guy can take it against Boxers. which was pretty darn far. He always said he never lost to a guy at boxing he didn't think he could take in the street.
To paraphrase Stander's wife at the time of the Frazier fight, "Ron's a Volkswagen Beetle entered in the Indy 500"...
Real tough man. All in all was a successful fighter, hell he fought for the world championship. He had a short prime due to his style and cutting so easy. Stayed around waaayyyyyy to long or he would be better thought of.
If you had Stander and Tex Cobb on your side in a bar fight, you’d own the joint’s liquor license long before last call.
Well, the fight wasn't on his official record, it didn't cost him anything to throw it. His opponent, Roy Shaw, was 40, and lost to the few people he fought with any skill, and was a welterweight originally. Stander was in a foreign country, fighting a favourite who was a career criminal and whose manager was Joe Pyle, a leading gangster. That entire circuit was run by the London mob. They wouldn't have let Stander win. Cliff Fields, the one half-decent fighter on the unlicensed circuit, absolutely mullered Lenny McLean (who beat Shaw 2-1) and everyone else on that circuit. Cliff Fields was knocked out by Richard Dunn in three rounds or so. Richard Dunn wasn't anything like as good a fighter as Ron Stander (who was no world beater himself). Shaw claims Stander had an injury. That shows to me that Shaw knew that the fight wasn't on the level and is being pretty nice about it, and not claiming he really won. Lastly, just watch the fight. Stander throws a few punches which fall short deliberately. He barely throws a punch after that. If anyone fought like their hands were tied it was Stander there. Broken rib or no, Stander could have taken Shaw's head off. He was more skilled, twice the guy's size and ten years younger.
