    OH PLEASE.:patsch
Daniels had won ONE of his last ELEVEN fights.
O Halloran had won ONE of his last SEVEN
Ramos had won ONE of his last TEN ,against Joe Murphy 1-9-1, and would lose ALL TEN of his remaining fights .
Spencer had not won a fight in FOUR YEARS,and had been stopped in FIVE of his last SEVEN.
    .

Joe was candid about nothing he never picked an opponent in his lfe, Yank Durham made his matches ,and kept him away from the iron of the division because of the hiding Ali had given him in their first fight.
Yank gave him two years on the gravy train , before he had to meet a serious challenger,ie one who was ranked.
Actually Durham wanted Frazier to retire after FOTC.

Please tell me you don't really believe what you posted?

Stander was put in there so the fans could view an entertaining title defense with no risk to Frazier's title, who was holding out for a big money offer. Stander was about as tough as humanly possible, the man had no defense or skill whatsoever, he kept pressing forward while eating punches and tried to land a few wild swings of his own.

He also caught a savage beating from Norton, who was landing 6 punch combinations at will without being able to floor the opponent.

despite an early KO over Shavers after taking Earnies best Stander moved slow in advancement and was never really dedicated. Ron was a tough guy and came to fight Frazier. JF needed a rest after the FOTC so he was entitled, Stander was a rough guy but never really learned how to fight but was strong and had heart and gave it his all vs Frazier just I would not really call RS well conditioned or trained..

O'Halloran was the first to stop Daniels after Terry achieved notice as a rising HW. Since Stander had beaten Jack, O'Halloran had seemingly rebounded a bit with the subsequent wins over Daniels and Big Cat. (What they did AFTER Frazier-Stander is irrelevant.)
Indeed fading badly, but still had a name and winning record (although that would eventually change).
Again, irrelevant in the context. (Let's forgo the "fortune telling" of what was yet to come.)
But still had a winning record, and only opponents with winning records held unavenged wins against him.
He was pretty clear in interviews after his final two title wins that it was now about the money for him
When did I indicate I personally believed any of it? I was merely laboring to construct pretenses behind how this title shot could have been rationalized to the public in May 1972 by those promoting it.

Frazier disregarded defense here against Daniels and just bore in winging with left hooks, which made for an entertaining fight if not a top class performance. Against Stander though he found out early that he wasn't in with a similar "push-over" in strength, and made some adjustments after the first round. Frazier's often overlooked uppercut was the key weapon for him against the defenseless brawler.

Stander deserved a title shot more than Ali deserved his first title shot.
Stander was more proven at the professional ranks than Ali post or prior to that point.
Ali was a paper winner due to cuts , Stander was a paper loser due to cuts ,
also Ali didn't beat Doug Jones and yet again proved undeserving (far from deserving) vs Henry Cooper.
